I don't think Hopkins necessarily dominated, but he was the clear victor for me, as for many reporters at ringside. He landed the cleaner and more effective blows, dictated the pace and hurt Calzaghe. All this at the old age of 43. I have no doubt prime Hopkins would have owned prime Calzaghe. Decent fight.
How the hell anyone can say Hopkins won is beyond me. He's a dirty, clever old ******* whose biggest weapon is spoiling. Calzaghe wasn't allowed to do what he does best, granted, but he was the aggressor throughout the fight. A few decent rights, one kd and 30 minutes of hugging doesn't win you fights....even in Vegas.
I thought Bernard won or a draw, but it could have gone either way. An EXTREMELY difficult fight to score...I thought Hopkins landed the more convincing, punishing blows however.
Bernard was not robbed. Bernard robbed everyone who saw this fight. I'm sure he will get nominated for the academy awards for best "I got hit on the nads with a phantom punch" performance.
I dont see how Calzaghe won this fight. I saw him land few real punches all night, whereas I saw Hopkins land some real snappy ones.Including a knockdown. Sure Hopkins held and spoiled and faked low blows, he's any ugly fighter who uses dubious tactics. But what the **** did Calzaghe do ? Calzaghe outworked him maybe a couple of rounds later on in the fight but that's it. With the knockdown Calzaghe must get 10 points out of each of 7 rounds just to get a draw, and you people are saying he did more than that, enough to have "won clearly". Calzaghe landed hardly anything clean on Hopkins, and none of it was snappy, head-rocking shots. Whereas Hopkins did so on a few occasions, and controlled the pace of the fight and out-maneuvered Joe through about 3/4 of the fight. Truth of this fight is that Hopkins did very little effective work BUT CALZAGHE DID EVEN LESS. Just because Calzaghe was making more of an effort doesn't mean he deserved rounds. Hitting thin air and connecting with one or two half-decent punches and a few slaps shouldn't win rounds against a man who's backing off and scoring with hard snappy counters, even if that guy's going at snail pace. Real punches have to count nore than half-punches and punch attempts. I'm British, a Calzaghe fan, and expected lots from him tonight. And I HATE Hopkins' style. But Hopkins won this fight in my opinion. And it was a crappy fight.
just because the old racist didn't win doesn't mean he was robbed. Calzaghe dominated down the stretch and did well enough after the 1st. he also landed far more 33 percent of 707 punches to hopkins 27 percent of 468. calzaghe also had the edge in power punches landed and jabs...so stop whining..maybe Hopkins should have to fight overseas now...no he is too gutless unlike Calzaghe. THere is nothing left to criticize him for now.
I don't post here often. However, I agree. Hopkins won this fight. Calzaghe didn't land ****. They just gave it to him because he was throwing sloppy ass punches. It was Jermain Taylor all over again. He didn't beat b-hop. People need to watch the fight again.
No way Bernard won that fight. He landed the better shots of the night but they were too few and far between. Joe clearly won.
hopkins sucks. aside from the knockdown nothing he threw, and he threw little between the grabs arm holding, came close to fazing calzaghe. the phantom low blow was a bit much, even for hopkins fans
