This is Hopkins in his 5th professional bout. Much different from what we see today! I'm also glad he changed to The Executioner. [yt]ga7C8p1FLGM[/yt]
You definitely can see the prison influence in this bout. He didn't mind getting popped back then, and it's weird to see him actively *resist* the clinch. He was much more tactical by the time he faced Jones in 1993.
Bernard was fighting at SMW for this fight. Wonder what his career would've been like if he had fought at 168 and up his whole career.
Yep. A higher-level brawl than this one is Hopkins/Echols II. I think that was the end of the true Hopkins beast. He dominated guys after that, but he seemed to want to punish Echols in an embarrassing way. I love it after the bodyslam when he winds up his right arm and then starts throwing his right hand again.
God in hell, what a drastic difference. He used to be a puncher-boxer, way more agressive, amazing how much his style changed, from that into a defensive counter puncher. He sure as hell isnt as fast or as quick or nimble as he used to be, obviously far more skilled though
What's extra funny is during the pregame for the Hopkins/Jones fight, they actually bill it as a matchup between punchers. Here you have two of the most difficult fighters to catch cleanly in the world, and it was expected to be an offensive fight. Larry Merchant probably wishes he could retract his statements made during that bout. He basically writes off both guys as stars. Gil Clancy doesn't give Hopkins full credit, but man he loved Jones. Bernard was much more fun to watch during the early/mid-90s than most people realize.
Yes he did. He also threw the same sharp, compact punches he does now, only he didn't have as good a left hand, IMO. But the right cross was lethal.
