There's not much difference size wise, if anything Cooper is the bigger man. Floyd started his pro career fighting at 166 / 168 which is super middle now, although he was very young and not fully developed. Either way whatever the size difference or similarities Floyd is just too good.
He lost those three, and forgive me for pointing out Moorer, as well, was a blown-up light-heavy. Moorer could have made cruiser easily but was a bit fat and wanted the heavyweight paydays. Cooper lost those 3 fights, so if you think those were his best performances, it doesn't say much for him. They were both "cruiserweights".
Patterson NEVER lost to a man of Cooper's class. Patterson beat those types. Cooper was fringe/journeyman level. Cooper lost to guys like Reggie Gross, Nate Miller, Everett Martin IN HIS PRIME.
Regardless, they are still Cooper's best performances, and it could be argued that he beat Mercer. However, the fact that I don't sympathize with that view of Moorer is another discussion in itself.
The point is, Bert Cooper has no significant "size advantage" over Patterson. And there are levels of class between them. Cooper has no advantages at all.
You're not ****ing paying attention are you? Skill has nothing to do with it. Sure Floyd is way more skilled and greater; that goes without saying. The fact is that Cooper's best performances were against Holyfield, Moorer, and Mercer. No pissant is going to remember that he beat Joe Hipp or Loren Ross, just that he gave the other three tough fights, and he was in terrific condition for those fights, which was well over 200.
Add Joe Hipp to Cooper's best wins. Ultimately, Hipp faded into obscurity, but he was not a bad fighter.
I think you're being harsh by calling him that. Look at pictures of him fighting Holyfield, Mercer or any of those guys. He wasn't big exactly, but wide back, thick in the shoulders, barrel chested, and muscular. Large head, big hands. In essence, he was about the same size as Tyson.
Hipp was a decent win. Orlin Norris too. I still rate the win against Willie DeWit as his best performance.
Perhaps not. But I'd be careful to write off his chances of an upset altogether. He gave some very good heavies a very rough evening.
Except he could make cruiserweight, that's all I'm getting at. He wasn't significantly bigger than Patterson.
As much as I would love to give a vote to Smokin' Bert, I think Patterson would win this. Bert always has a chance of landing something big on Floyd, and flattening him. But, more likely than not, Floyd would get up, and, get back to business. I see Patterson landing first, and more often in this one. All that being said, it would be fun as hell to watch.
