I heard he was planning to fight again...I hope he looks after himself. I've always thought of Bert as a 'what could have been' story and I've been a fan of his for a long time now. Tell him a lot of people are in his corner.
Great fight, one of the earlier examples of a less mobile Moorer liking to fight off the ropes. Bad idea against Tua years later amiright.
The scary thing is that's the same year (1992) as Bowe vs Coetzer, another really good HW fight. It's fights like those that remind you of how tremendously exhilarating a great HW fight can be.
McCall said Bert Cooper hit him the hardest in an interview. Though Douglas would be a good choice, and he had McCall in a bad way and could have scored the TKO if he pressed it a bit.
I can't remember which fight it was (I'm sure someone here with a better memory than I will), but Burt had just KO'd the guy who was out cold and being taken from the ring in a stretcher; the TV interviewer asks Burt for a comment and Burt says something like "I just want to thank God that the fight turned out this way".......Priceless
I'm starting to feel left out of this discussion, so I'm going to presume that Orlin Norris hit him the hardest
I've read an interview where he said that Douglas was the hardest puncher he fought. He also said that the punch he took from Bruno in the first round was the most he had ever been hurt. http://www.eastsideboxing.com/news.php?p=11465&more=1 ESB: Which of the many great opponents you faced had the greatest punch? Oliver McCall: In my past? I think one guy had a pretty good punch on him, and that was Buster Douglas. Thankfully, I didn’t get hit with a lot of really big shots in that fight, but from what I recall, he had nice power, and leverage on them. So I would say Buster Douglas. ESB:While I don’t think you were close to ever being hurt seriously, who did come the closest to buzzing you? Oliver McCall: I would say Bruno in the first round where he caught me with a nice little right hand and gave me a lump under my eye. It was kind of hard to get back into the fight after it, cause it was one of those punches that changes a fight. In retrospect, I might have started a little faster, instead of being a little lackadaisical, because it wasn’t enough to come on in the later rounds cause he held out and got the victory.
