S,just read your latest segment on Bert Lytle...Excellent and informative as usual about a "mystery" boxer of the past. I am pretty certain Bert Lytle was sparring in front of me at Stillman's gym and I and others were unaware...You mention a name Lew Perez, who I saw in the 1940s fighting a 4 round prelim.I have never forgotten his name, not because of his fighting ability, but because he walked towards the ring SHOUTING jokes, one of which I still remember lo these many decades. "The birthday cake may be heavy, but the candles make it LIGHT ". Corny , but unusual for a prelim fighter walking to the ring and taking his usual beating. Brave
SOB was Lew Perez. You also mention another name from my youth,
Arthur Susskind jr. a NYS boxing judge and referee who once fought under the name of Young Otto, and as a young boxer ko'd 16 straight opponents in the FIRST rd.,and had 42 first round ko's. So thanks again S for your great chapters and keep em a cummin...:good

Perez, shouting jokes en route to the ring. Man, I should send the drafts to you before publishing. Eyewitness gems like that are priceless!

You gotta love the reporters back then. Here's how the Lytell-Perez was covered:

"The Evening News reported that he “supplied the fans with plenty of laughs in his match with Chocolate Kid of Cuba, but when he ran out of gas in the fourth round he also ran out of laughs, and was counted out.”

    7. Chelsea papers don't cover much. From what I saw, they cover local politics more than anything else.

Joe Curcio mentioned is the same one that fought SRR in 1946 right? Think that fight exists on film.

With next to no amateur experience. Some reports glorify his Navy fights but those were pumped up by Aaronson and co. He sparred (with Soose among others) and may have had a few, but not many because he spent too much time in the brig and had his privileges taken away right and left. This was a natural fighter.

    Very, very interesting, Stonehands.:good

So another one of Murderers' Row "somehow" didn't met Robinson;)

Robinson's way of making business looks a lot closer to some certain fighters of today than someone like Greb;)
