I chased that down, at least as it applies to Lytell. It's double hearsay. Double hearsay might be true, but it shouldn't be presented as such. It says that a black gangster, probably out of NYC, told someone (who I'll keep unnamed since I don't know if he wants to be named) that he was in the clink with Lytell and that's where the story started. That stuff that happens in prison isn't indicative of sexual orientation as it is of sexual availability.

Anyhow, I tried to at least find out if he was in prison when he went back there from Oakland in the 50s, but without at least a date of conviction, there's no way of knowing. I'll check Walpole prison in MA -maybe they aren't as strict and can find out with a SS# or birthdate.

The fact is, Bert was married, had a kid, and even at 62 he had a girlfriend half his age. That tears it for me. And I doubt all that was an Elton John charade.

Yep, her name was Patricia and she was about as short as Tiny Patterson, his manager in the 40s. "Pat" is the one, you'll remember, who died suddenly in the late 80s.

Just finished the whole article. It's absolutely fabulous! I wish there were more such pieces of writings on more or less forgotten fighters, great ones who were denied a decent chance at a title, former good contenders, etc. It enlightens the whole picture.
Many thanks to the author, Springs Toledo!

During the early 1940s, California probably had more top middleweights than the entire world does at the present time.

    Thank you!

There's another Murderers' Row series in the works right now. Aaron "Little Tiger" Wade. Untitled and almost half-done, it should be ready by March. I will start another thread when the time comes.

Hello, I'm always interested in learning about some of the less famous fighters from the past. You're remark about Sheppard rumors being "horror movie chilling" interests me. I cannot find much about him online. What was it you heard? Send a PM if not able to reply here. Thanks, look forward to talking with you...

Hi Burt, saw your post and wanted to respond. I went with my dad once to see James Toney training. This was 1993 and we were talking with his trainer and a few other old-timers. We were all standing around talking boxing and, I'm not sure how the topic came up, but someone mentioned boxers that were gay! So they began to mention a few names and then someone said "Popeye Lou Woods". The other guys agreed and said "oh yea, Popeye Lou Woods, he was gay too". Now... there was a middleweight called "Popeye" Walter Woods, and another "Sgt." Lou Woods. Obviously they confused the wrong nickname with the wrong fighter. I didn't realize it at that moment, and always wondered exactly which fighter they were referring to? Judging by what little I have found, I take it it must have been Walter Woods? Is this right? Also, I understand he was in prison? Can't find much online and always interested hearing about the more obscure fighters from the past. If you, (or anyone else), isn't comfortable replying publicly, please send me a private message. Thanks!
