rip, i always thought thought he was biased to the old schools but its hard not to love that unlit cigar.
I don't know that he quite did that, though. I think he served as an historian, archivist, and passionate enthusiast for an era when boxing actually was a much larger sport & business than it currently is...and during which some of its towering legends played out their timeless careers.
Taking bets on whether Max Kellerman (after an acceptable period of time) takes them up in homage... :think
RIP Bert damn one of the great lovers of the sport an old school historian and pro boxing journalist gone, wish he was still here.
R.I.P. Didnt always agree with him, but he was a legend in the sport, and he will be missed. I'll certainly toast to his memory. :good
RIP Bert. Dang I thought he was 90 something too. My father is 71 and looks about 30 years younger than Bert, and acts that much younger, too. Can't believe somebody that young would be so invested in the old timers pre-recording camera.
Knew it was just a matter of time, he used to go weekly on a local sports talk radio show here in Portland.. and last he was on a month ago he said terrible and sounded resigned to the fact he didn't have long to go.. just the way he carried on. Still he was Bert Sugar. Guy came on to not talk boxing, but college football. Was a curious thing, did his "lovable losers" routine with the guys. He was a true legend of the sport, and had an immense amount of boxing knowledge, though he often overrated the past and made light of the current state of boxing. Then again, a lot of ways he was true, but he was like your Gramps ole' friend waxing nostalgic, you'd just let him carry on and listen even if half of what he said was a bunch of bull****. He was truly entertaining. He'll be drinking a stiff one with Joe Louis and the Rock now.
I didn't agree with his opinions most of the time, but he sure was an entertaining & eccentric character. :good RIP
I'm really sorry to hear that. When I was starting to watch boxing as a casual fan he was one of the characters that inspired me to watch old fights and to learn more about boxing.
