Ah bummer!!, was always a fan and loved seeing him on the ESPN classic shows, another colourful boxing character we've lost this year. RIP
RIP Sorry to hear this. He was certainly a fun character, even if I did disagree with many of his evaluations.
Damn, I'm so shocked all of the classic boxing faces seem to be dissappearing. Even tho i definently didn't agree with some of what he said, he truly loved the sport and was great ambassador. RIP.
It's strange, because just last night I was watching that ESPN show with Brian Kenny, where Bert Sugar was running down the list of his personal top 10 heavyweights. I never thought that today I'd hear news of his passing. Very shocked by this... I liked his writng a lot...some classic lines. (On Buster Douglas) "Holyfield looked like he spent six months on a desert island, and Buster looked like he spent six months on a dessert island." (On Richard Steele, after stopping the Tyson v Ruddock fight): "Steele looked like a fly in ointment: attracting comment and mention but hardly enjoying it." Boxing's biggest personalities are dying off. Awful news. RIP, Bert.
RIP for Bert Sugar. While not a true historian, Sugar was a boxing original. A great story teller and ambassador to the game.
I knew there was a reason I liked Ring Magazine during those years, and the other magazine he edited.RIP Bert.
I remember him walking around NY city with his hat and cigar, you knew it was him...he was a boxing character from the old school of Damon Runyon characters...RIP Bert Sugar
