Got to love these Boxng Historians i dont have much on either ones resume but as far as the sport goes i love what they do... the way they speak about the sports sounds like poetry its hard for me to pick... who do you prefer?
I don't like Merchant's dislike for certain styles, which he disrespects. On the other hand,, Sugar would need a mondern fighter to win titles in 8 weight classes and win 85 fights to rank them in his top 50 because of his love of old school fighters.
bert sugar totally ignores foreign fighters. he underrates lennox horribly and probably doesnt even know one foreign fighter's name today. he thinks the hw champion has to be an american. merchant may be senile but gives all fighters their props regardless of where they are from. he clearly hates mayweather cause he is so flashy but respects him as a great fighter too. he is in love with wlad though :yep
Merchant is on the money, he may be anoying but he calls it like it is, he may drink but most of us do and he is not a brownose fake like Kellerman
I'm not too high on either of them, and to be completely honest, I would consider Sugar a middle-of-the-pack historian. Both are too bias to be considered top-of-the-line guys. For Merchant, it's slick boxers who he dislikes. For Sugar, it's the current fighters who he dislikes.
I prefer Sugar over Merchant. Larry comes across too many times too negative towards certain boxers and styles. Sugar's bias is towards the old school guys, but he doesn't go off on rants against fighters the way Merchant does.
bert sugar is pretty sweet; plus he doesn't have all the awkward pauses like merchant. in fairness to merchant, he does ask good questions of fighters most of the time.
They're both characters. Merchant has a penchant for punchers though, while Sugar enjoys "sweet science" kind of fighters, be they boxer-punchers or pure boxer. Actually, they both enjoy knockouts (merchant more though), but the difference is Merchant prefers the puncher(-boxer) while Sugar prefers the boxer(-puncher)
