He's obviously one of boxing's greatest historians. But what is your take on the guy? Is he an objective and knowledgeable analyst who tells it like and is still relevant in today's boxing world or has his time passed by and he's still stuck in the Marciano and Cassius Clay days and is out of touch with today's boxers? Just curious to see what this board thinks about this guy.
Very intelligent, and knows pretty much all a person could know about boxing without ever actually stepping in the ring before. As a few people already said, he lives in the past with who he thinks is better than who, but generally he's probably the best at what he does.
yeah he knows his stuff, and is pretty observant BUT his bias for the old timers seriously warps any objectivity he tries to bring to the table when discussing modern day fighters.
He knows more about old figters than most people could dream of, he knows as much about the modern gneration of fighter's as i have forgot while typing this message.
He is more of a great story teller than a boxing historian. To be a boxing historian, you should recognize the great fighters of recent boxing and not just suck on the nuts of every old fighter. He's a clown for ESPN that always has thousands of witty jokes/quotes ready and knows things like the name of Stanley Ketchell's dog, but is too much of a blind nuthugger to see that putting Roy Jones at the bottom of a Top 100 ATG list is moronic.
he is a knowledgable guy if you've listened to him or read some of his work. i think he's a pretty cool character for the sport as some sort of crusty old historian. he does have some heavy oldschool bias and i'd take any of his opinions about newer fighters with a grain of salt.
The guy is a living connection with the sports hayday. He's wrong at times and subject to all the same flaws as anyone else. Tends to go a little crazy over Dempsey but that example pretty much shows the depth.
Bert Sugar dont know ****!! He rates Ali as the 50th greatest of all time:rofl :rofl :rofl I think he drops names from ancient romeatsch
From reading your opinions, seems like he's a guy who knows the past cold but can't be taken seriously when he's discussing today's fighters. And that was pretty much my take on the guy. Good source for the history of the sport but not good when it comes to analyzing a fighter from this era.
I find him incredibly annoying. He did a retro piece on Castillo/Corralles and was way off the mark with some of his statements. Not to mention that his constant puns are very lame. Plus, anytime you see the guy he's bashing boxing and talking up the good old days. His time is over, boxing doesn't need Bert Sugar anymore.
He has more knowledge of the sport than anyone else in the world, but hes a real problem sharing it with the public.
