I don't really like Bert too much either, but you seem to really hate him. Was there something that happened between him and you? I'm sure you ran into him since you've worked for ESPN.
Bert loves to tell his stories. He also is very biased towards pre WW2 fighters. He is a one of a kind, like Zakman said, but as far as breaking down fights and analyzing what will or what happened inside the ring, I don't think too highly of him.
I like him on ESPN Ringside Classic. Like the other night there was a show with Bert Sugar and Carmen Basillio talking about Robinson. That was pretty good. Boo
I was sure, the Tyson Douglas knockout got on Bert's all time knockout list. Of couse amazing, non of Tyson's PRIME knockouts got on the list. No holmes or Spinks kos there. I sort of agree with Marciano Walcott 1 though.
I can't stand the guy personally. He doesn't love or respect the sport that has given all of his fame. If he truly loved boxing Sugar wouldn't spend so much time slamming it, which only turns off the average sports fan that is not a big boxing fan that happens to be watching ESPN when it comes on. He generally makes any fight that he is "analyzing" seem pointless because "fighters from 50 years ago would have destroyed these two clowns". He is only concerned with making himself seem more important, knowledgable and witty than he is with actually informing the viewer with anything to interest them in the sport. He also is NOT like the print journalists of yesteryear because in the end those guys loved and helped promote the sport they were covering where as Sugar is PRETENDING to be old school but is really just a self promoting windbag.

see my first post too. why is it ignored if i make a point first?:huh ah,screw this thread.:blah[/quote] Wow! Apparently if someone posts something it means it automatically has something to do with you!!!!!!!!!!!! Thats what I call an ego. I was basing my statement on him not being like a print journalist of yesteryear soley off the fact that he dresses the part with the hat and cigar and pretends to hate television journalists.

No, no, I certainly do not hate him. But I find it extremely annoying that so many people have been bamboozled into thinking this guy is some sort of boxing expert. He knows dates, stories, the history...but expert on boxing to me is something that knows the ACT of boxing, not the history of it, the anecdotes etc. I also cant stand the way he tries to actually dismiss people when they give their opinions, I see him listen to a real expert sitting next to him give their opinion and he scrunches up his face when they say something. He is so fixated on the old time guys.... I am particularly annoyed when guys like him tout the Jack Johnson, Tunney's, etc etc like they were these unbeatable forces of nature whose skills and techniques were so brilliant... when the fact is that clubbing Foreman, etc would beat a Jack Johnson half to death. Also, for what t it is worth. I have dealt with him in person once, that was all it took, and he is exactly what I said, one of those pompous, life of the party type of guys. All the personality, in my experience, of a rock.
