It was only in his late years that Bert gave Muhammad Ali his due. Sugar was very much a man of his time,so that's why a lot of the more recent fighters did n't get as high a placing as one would have thought.
Watched this the other day, quite astonished at some of his rankings especially as i like to judge my top 10 on a H2H basis
At one point when talking about the quality of opposition Marciano faced, Sugar compared the challenge of Don Cockell to the 1st round ko in the Jersey Joe rematch. Because Rocky had knocked Walcott out in the first Sugar tried to put that as a negative on Rocky and to justify his placement. I just didn't get where Sugar was coming from through most of his selections and explanations behind them.
In a way I respect his list because it wasn't compiled using some formula or set criteria, it was just a snapshot of how he perceives histories hw's. I don't agree with plenty of his choices but that's what boxing's about. there's no such thing as a **** list (really hope Frank doesn't enter the thread and prove me wrong here). A list is just a perception of a deserved order and the way Bert compiles his has a very nice natural quality to it. A legend who's charisma is missed in the boxing world.
I don't think its a bad or crazy list at all. Johnson, Dempsey, Ali, Louis are four names that usually get tossed around in most top 5s. Marciano, Frazier, Foreman, Holmes, Tunney are usually top 10 or higher. I have no problem with Charles in top 10, obviously. He left off Evander, Lewis, and Tyson. But I guess most lists that include them usually leave out Johnson, Dempsey, Charles, and Tunney. You can only fit so many fighters in a top 10.
All great fighters, but the order from 1 to 10 is utter bull**** in my view of the boxing world....... MR.BILL:bbb
It is a list that most people here would have some issues with, but every person has some kind of era bias in their list. Like with Nat Fleisher, Sugar has a legacy which is bigger than te idiosyncracies of his top 10 list.
Mr. Sugar was a great contributor to boxing, but - You could ask him '10' different times to put a Top 10 list together, and you would get '10' different lists. Burt had Joe Louis anywhere from 1 to 5, depending on the time you asked him on the late afternoon train leading from Grand Central Station to Chappaqua. That would be the Metro-North Harlem Line for you 'non' New Yorkers.
I know we have all our favorites, but Charles ahead of Foreman, Frazier an Holmes. come on man. I still like Bert a lot though
