The rumor mill is suggesting Berto may defend his belt againast Randall Bailey. Is this the type of fight that is supposed to quiet the critics? Facing another fighter who spend 90% of his career in a weight class below?

I like Bailey, he's always been fun to watch, but he is what he is. A mere contender at his belt, a gatekeeper right now.

Berto says beating Cintron would do NOTHING for him, which i bull****. Beating someone seen as your toughest opponent will ALWAYS do something. Berto's (and many posters here) simple and very quick dismissal of Cintron has much more to do with personal feeling then anything legitimate. Whether most of you agree or not, Cintron is a threat to Berto. He can beat Berto. He's a much bigger threat then Bailey. And most important;y, a necessary, and natural, step up in comp.

Perhaps it's AL Haymon saying no to tough fights. Maybe Haymon and Berto both know a loss could jeapardize a big money fight in the future (even thought it really shouldn't. Blame HBO for selling ang buying hype).

    Thoughts?

Might be closer than you would think. Bailey has an awesome body slam which could hurt Berto !

Wait, so he doesn't wanna fight Cintron because it'll do "nothing for him", so he'll fight Randall Bailey instead?!

    :-(

Berto needs to fight Cintron, Clottey, or Cotto next.

what excites me most about Berto is that we haven't seen the best of him yet.

He needs a big fight though, and fast.

Cotto is facing Mayorga apparently. Cintron and Clottey are perfectly acceptable, and good step ups for him.

Apparently the winner of Mike Jones v. Soto Karass is a possibility. Not exactly a jump in comp either though.

Frankly, Bailey would be Berto's second or third toughest fight to date. And there are still lingering questions about his beard, which would be answered definitively if he faced Bailey.

That's good. Now lets just hope he refutes the Jones/Soto-Karass rumor as well.

What's the rumor - that they're gonna rematch? If so, why would you want that refuted?

Dibella said that Maidana turned down an offer to fight Berto too. I'm a fan of El Chino so I am happy about this. He needs to position himself for another shot at 140 before being used as a gatekeeper at higher weights.

Realistically, there aren't many options right now for Berto. Pac, Mosley, Cotto, Margo are tied up for the next 6 months, Mayweather and Williams are Haymon fighters, and the Bobfather doesn't have any interest in matching any of his fighters against Berto either ("why should I promote this guy"?).

Cintron is the only realistic, decent name fight for Berto so let's hope HBO comes on board and both fighters are up for it.

Very well thought out post, PBFred.

People have become so used to calling others ducker this and ducker that, they've forgotten how to have a civilized discussion. :good

    You got it, BoxKing.

Berto-Cintron @147 or a ~150 catchweight is a legit fight and the winner is set up nicely for a big fight later in the year. It's a no-brainer IMO
