I think that would have made abig difference, because physically Quintana could have survived and went on to fight, but he seemed to give up mentally, and like someone said it even looked as if he was waiting for the stoppage. Physically speaking it was a premature stoppage, but the way Quintana was fighting nullyfies that and makes it an OK stoppage in my book.
Not premature. Any decent referee, someone familiar with Quintana, would know he was toast. Once Carlos is on the fade and hurt that's it. It's over.
That was a bit of an overstatement. Berto complained to the ref about 25 times for being hit behind the head, the ref warned Quintana twice and took away a point.
Nahh, Quintana was bouncing all over the place and was already badly hurt that's why he quit fighting and almost completely quit defending himself. A brutal KO would have happend eventually if the fight would have gone on. No need for that. The ref gave Quintana all the opportunities in the world to regain his composure but he never did. It was a good stoppage by the ref. Although overall I'd give the ref about a D as far as his officiating performance went that night. Terrible job of letting the fight get ugly and almost out of control... and he also allowed himself to be manipulated by Berto's crybaby tactics.
To be fair, it wasn't an easy fight to officiate. Both guys lunging in and clinching like madmen. Do you think the point deduction wasn't called for?
You can argue that both ways. When Quintana was in the process of throwing the punch he was aiming it at the side of Berto's head, and then Berto turned his head and the punch landed on the back of the head. Obviously, Carlos didn't mean to crack Andre on the back of the head like that, but seeing as how he'd already done it several times before then maybe he deserved no sympathy. The ref was still riding Berto's jock all night though. You can't argue with that.
