Agreed. BUT there are also many other things to improve. His footwork was awful, he was off balanced a lot of times and only uses his upper body to avoid punches. Not to mention he has to plant his feet before he gets off with punches. Also he has no business fighting with his hands low, when he clearly doesn't possess the ability to slip punches only with head movement. He got his hands up sometimes, but with one punch on the gloves he would put them back down or try to clinch. And of course he has to have better tactics/ring IQ. Quit the damn holding, or at least do it right! When he should just take a step back or push Quintana off to keep his distance so he could deliver some combos, he clinched. He can't even hold properly, Quintana had a party with little head and body shots all night while they were clinching.
Berto vs. Cintron likely ends in a knockout either way. Cintron has more power but the worse chin (and more fragile mind). Berto is faster but is no harder to hit clean.
i can tell no matter what is said, you have it in for caballero, so nothing will change your mind. but wtf is up w/ you talking about his opponents? caballero was BEGGING juanma to fight him. he tried to get in with gamboa. he woulda been more than happy to fight rigondeaux. fact is, none of these guys were open to fighting him. he took this fight as a replacement fight for another that was cancelled because he couldnt get any other fights. as you may or may not know, i am a friend of pelenchin's. trust me, he wants to fight the best. he is 33 he isnt trying to pad a resume. his time to make his mark is now. the problem is the other top guys dont see him as a beneficial opponent to them. this wasnt some simple, well laid out plan to fight an easy opponent. this fight came along when he couldnt get any other fights. he needed to take something. and before you say yordan was a can,. look how many people were calling for the upset beforehand. maybe he isnt a can. maybe caballero was good enough to make him look like one
Berto is the perfect example of an A-level talent who needs to switch trainers to become an A-level fighter. He has everything he needs. He's already a terrific offensive fighter, but he can be even better with a few tweaks. His defense needs to shore up, or he will use himself up taking punishment in tuneup fights. The most important thing is Berto needs to be taught balance and ring generalship. He's obviously not getting enlightened with the trainers he has now. Top guys like Roach, one of the Mayweathers, Steward or Muhamed would do wonders for him.
Good stoppage. Quintana was getting ****ed up pretty bad. That last punch was NASTY. For all of you who think it should have kept going. I'm glad you're not refs.
HBO is wise to show Berto's fights (and Angulo's). He is (they are) exciting to watch. I didn't think Berto would do that well against Quintana and after I saw that Carlos had rehydrated to around 8 pounds heavier I had a flashback to Angulo-Cintron and thought this might go that way. I can't say either that he is an elite boxer on the scene today but that's just saying that he is not Pac or Mayweather. NBD. He is still dealing successfully with some decent boxers. I thought Quintana probably would withstand the onslaught but I still thought it was a reasonable stoppage.
No, I think Berto's chin is worse then Kermit's. The guy was nearly KO'd by Cosme Riveria for Christ sake. Berto has more heart then Cintron, but who doesnt? And yeah Berto is faster, but honestly I think it comes down to once Cintron lands, I think Berto would be in huge trouble.
:good I'm watching the replay on tv now and it's pretty sadistic and I felt it should've been stopped earlier.
I've been a proponent of Berto switching trainers for sometime now. His natural tools are impressive but his technical development has been slow to a crawl. Like you've denoted, Berto must improve his head movement, balance, inside fighting, and overall defense because clearly the elites of the division won't be missing the countless openings that Berto been supplying.
