"After Collazo, bring on Cotto or Mosley," DiBella said. "Margarito is a little too big and it's not the right time, though. We don't mind fighting Clottey, but with all due respect to Joshua, he doesn't bring a lot of money to the table. But if the money is there, we don't have a problem with that fight. I promote welterweights like Kermit Cintron and Carlos Quintana, who are both former champions and viable guys. Andre Berto is going to be in some big fights. This is the end of the learning curve." It looks like if Berto gets past Forbes, Collazo will be his next fight. After that, it looks like they're ready to match him up with any Welter not named Margarito or Williams.
David Reid had a defective eye and was ruined by an ATG. Berto has no such injuries and there is no one as good as Tito at Welter.
they are bringing him along very fast (which is what usually happens when you win a title quickly, especially WBC). Forbes to Collazo right away, and then Collazo to Cotto or Mosley right away. I respect it but I don't think Berto will measure up. We'll see.
Berto is better than a lot of people think it'll show tomorrow versus Forbes vastly underrated in this forum
Berto could be looking too far ahead.. I don't see Berto beating Cotto, Mosley, or Clottey.. Hell, theres even a chance Forbes could pull the upset, but I doubt it..
Collazo is not that big of a step up. He can handle that. Cotto will be tied up until the end of next year. So that's still a few fights away. You'll definately see him against Collazo next. After that, It will l probably be Cintron or Quintana if he beats Collazo.
Forbes is going to get worked over. He should stay away from Clottey. He can beat Shane. He can beat Cotto as well, but that's a pretty dangerous fight.
berto can certainly punch, but i think its going to be real interesting when he fights someone who has a good chin and a good punch
clottey's chin will be too tough for berto and he throws too many punches i dont like this fight for berto
I agree with Dibella about not putting Berto in with a guy like Margarito. While Berto is a very hard puncher with excellent hand speed, especially in his combinations, he doesn't have the boxing ability or the defense to win against Margarito. Berto is probably my favorite fighter because of his huge upside, but all bias aside, and while he appears to improved significantly since his fight against Rivera, he still has his flaws. For one, his chin is very questionable, but not necessarily because he has a weak chin, but because he HAD and possibly still DOES have a tendency to stick his chin out when throwing punches. That is a terrible thing to do and something he should have fixed in the amateurs. I understand though because when you're so used to overwhelming your opponent with power shots, you sometimes stick your chin out a bit because you believe it will give you better vision and improve your accuracy. A second thing he needs to work on is his defense, obviously, but you have to remember with Berto, offense comes first. His offense is often his defense because his handspeed and combinations usually have his opponents on retreat, and it doesn't give him much opportunity to test his defensive prowess. I didn't like the way he fought against Estrada because I felt he was inside, mixing it up to much, when if he would have used more footwork, he could have kept the fight at his range instead of Estrada's and finished the fight more quickly. Which is something else Berto needs to work on which falls into both the defensive and offensive categories, FOOTWORK. Berto plods too much, and while this is reasonable because he's generally a pressure fighter who believes in his punch, he needs to use his brain and outbox limited fighters like Estrada or Margarito who's gameplan is to come right at you. While Estrada is tough as hell, Berto could have used better positioning and more straight shots to keep Estrada off of him. With that said, Berto has alot of potential, but I don't know if he's ready yet for a guy like Cotto who while not as physically gifted as Berto, nor as hard of a puncher, is a much better boxer with generally better technique. With that said though, Berto's best punch is the uppercut, and Cotto has a tendency to put his head right in position for that punch, so give it a few more fights and Berto might be in position to knock Cotto out. For now though, let him get past Forbes and put him in with Collazo and we'll see what's up. I don't know about Clottey yet, but that's a possiblity, but only if Berto elects to BOX. ****, he's got to move up the ranks at some point.
You gotta outbox Clottey. Williams would probably tear him up, but Williams is also incredibly versatile. Floyd would probably make it easy too, but it would be one hell of a boring fight. If Berto fights Clottey, he needs to box and avoid getting into too many exchanges, although I think Berto will get the better of them, but unless he fixes his defensive defeciencies, like putting his chin in the air, he might get knocked down or out.
Berto is a horrible style matchup for Collazo. Berto would make him look like he's moving in quicksand, much like Mosley did.
First, people underrate Berto, to me. Second, I'm glad you said that about David Reid...he was my fave fighter at the Olympics, and I thought he'd do it big...he had skills. Damn, that eye!
