What? Are you serious? It has absolutely nothing to do with a fight with listón..they never fought him, what a Bull **** Plus 70s ali was miles better than 60s liston

Leotis Martin beat Liston in the 1960's. He knocked him out cold.

Quarry and Frazier would have a chance in the late 1960's too.

The 1960's as a group pretty much lacked size and power, but Sonny visibly slowed down 1-2 years after the Ali fights.

70,s ali would have struggled with 60,s liston. Watch the first fight ali won because liston couldnt track him down used his footwork to keep away from him. 70,s ali was slower and his footwork wasnt as good wouldnt have got away from liston. Stop kidding yourself on...liston was a terrific heavyweight.

Just to confirm...whats your thoughts on ali? One of the best heavyweights ever?

I don't see Quarry fighting Liston, because of the Machen fight.

Hypothetical Liston reign if Joe Martin gets Ali a baseball glove and convinces him that instead of a fighter, Ali can be the next Willie Mays:

1964 Liston Ko over Doug Jones who hasn't lost since Folley.
1964 has a second fight because no Ali hernia, I think Chuvalo is a good opponent. I'm gonna say Liston UD Chuvalo.
1965 Liston knocks out Terrell who is fighting for the title 2 years earlier.
I don't think Williams meets Liston for a third time, though it's possible and Liston wins again.I can see a Machen rematch happening.
Machen fights more on the offensive and is knocked out or he doesn't engage and it's a second UD for Liston.
Liston probably takes on one of Ali's defenses (London, Mildenberger) and wins.
Then in late 1966, Frazier beats Oscar and in 67 Frazier beats Liston, unless Liston can coast for a year in which case Liston loses the title in 1968 to Joe.
Liston is champ for 5-6 years, with an unofficial champ in waiting status for 2-3 years more (1959 - 1968).
Frazier is champ 5-6 years loses to Foreman.

I tend to agree with this. Ali's best performance was the 1964 fight over Liston. In the 1970's he was slower, and being slow is not good vs Liston, who unlike Foreman could hit a ton and maintain his steam.

If you rest on the ropes vs Liston, you're in trouble.

    1963-1964 Liston > 1974-1975 Ali.

Amazing how such a simple question can stretch out for multiple pages when the thread could have ended with one word " Nobody."

Good post.:good there are a lot of 50-50 fights for Sonny from 1964 at world level. Terrell, Chuvalo, Bonnavena, Frazier, Ellis, Quarry. Crucially, I'm sure they could all have met Liston with more confidence and desire than Patterson could manage.

As for his pre championship run from 1958, dont see Liston as "a champ in waiting" that long though, he needed to beat Patterson or Ingo for that status. Wins over Harris, Folley and Machen do not eclipse what Ingo or Floyd had done. That's just contender fare.

Ingo beat Machen first so he was #1 not Liston. Then there were automatic rematch clauses that had been in place since Charles v Walcott. Marciano had it. Patterson had it. Ingo had it. Sonny had it and Ali had it.
