Besides Roy Jones, which fighter in history would be best equipped to beat Calzaghe?

i dont know if anyone will agree, but the one that was the akward fast puncher with a long string of title defeses was virgil hill and although i cant say that hill would be favored i could see him have a good chance of winning at 168.

steve collins was tough and would give joe a good fight.

maybe a blown up ray robinson... that man could do anything.

but i think the second fighter that possess the best tools to beat joe calzaghe was a prime bernard hopkins around the time he beat carl daniels. he could have easily made moved up and i think he right under jones as the biggest threat to joe's legacy.

Toney. He has the durability, defense, power and workrate to go toe to toe with Calzaghe.

 

Toney(exposes him lunging in), Hagler(just out toughs him), Roy(kicks his ass) and Dawson(kicks his ass)

Bob Fitzsimmons was really the first supermiddleweight.

A blacksmith by trade giving him a heavyweight's upperbody.

Reportedly, 2 of his opponents didn't survive after fights with Bob.

If he could stop James J. Corbett with one punch to the solar plexus,
then gosh help JoeCal if he comes in face first against Rudy Robert.

The definition of an uppercut would be defined from the punch that would land and KO Joe.

 

And maybe Floyd too?

 

Harry Greb. From descriptions he sounds like a more active, more awkward, tougher, dirtier JC. Also, I'd pick Bob Fitzsimmons by a mid round KO.

 

Jesus, boxing fans are some of the stupidest people in world.

For those of you that said Marvin Hagler and James Toney, especially Hagler. They would have nightmares with Calzaghe. Toney for the same reason that Joe did, would get outboxed all night.

Hagler would be even worse, it would literally be a shutout, its a stylistic nightmare for him. Think about it.

People who Joe Calzaghe would have trouble with:

Roy Jones at SMW
Michael Spinks at LHW

I've never seen any footage of Greb, but I know his record is sensational so I cant comment on what the fight would be like.

I'd favour Calzaghe over both Bob Foster and Ezzard Charles at LHW, for obvious reasons.

Monzon I feel would be 50/50, but Calzaghe would get the edge down the stretch.

So I have it as

Roy Jones at 168
Michael Spinks at 175

Those are the 2 guys I would favour over Calzaghe.

Spinks, Moore and Charles at LH obviously. (and RJJ, but we will count him in at Calzaghe's preferred weight... Just for fun )

Roy Jones at 168 eleven times out of ten, with 50/50 on moving-up Middleweights Hopkins, Toney, Monzon and Hagler; largely due to styles (and that Monzon and Hagler never left 160).

And this is without including guys from way back in the day like Greb, or even SRR on a good 160 pound day.

 

Just because he hasn't fought any greats doesn't mean he wouldn't have beaten them.

Thats what makes me laugh about some of the opinions on here, if a fighter has only a couple of big wins on their record but never fought an ATG people naturally presume that means they wouldn't have beaten any great fighter. Well it doesn't quite work like that fools.

Watch Calzaghe at his best watch, watch Toney at his best, Calzaghe is the much better boxer and fighter, so I'd fancy him to have win ( but Im not arrogant enough to say it would be a certainty because nothing is certain when two good fighters face up )

 

Calzaghe has a more active style than Toney, but doesn't mean his style was any better. Toney's style was a thing of beauty, he was like a walking ambush. Calzaghe's style is more of a pick you appart, out point you, overwhelm you.. Toney would bait, take punches to land his own, and to set people up so he could land bigger shots. Toney wasn't a huge puncher but had some nice devastating knockouts due to his ability to surprise opponents.

 

90% of the Americans here said Lacy would whoop Calzaghe, so any objective study goes out of the window, Eubank and Kessler would have a good chance to beat Hopkins,Toney,rjj etc, and Calzaghe beat them, says it all really.
