I did a list of the ten best boxers of this decade on the general forum and I've decided to list the ten best boxers of every decade starting with the 1920s. Its very possible I've left someone out you think should be in, if thats the case I'll think about rectifying it. I've decided not to rank them as it was so long ago it would be too complicated. Okay here goes.... Jack Dempsey Harry Greb Tiger Flowers Benny Leonard Benny Lynch Jimmy McLarnin Lew Tendler Gene Tunney Pancho Villa Mickey Walker Try not to slaughter me if I've missed someone obvious they may be in my 1930s list.
Maybe Canzoneri..he is kind of a gap fighter..Did some very good work late in the 20's but his best stuff in the early 30's.
This content is protected "Panama" Joe Gans (Cyril Quinton Jr.) BORN November 14 1896; Barbadoes, British West IndiesHEIGHT 5-7WEIGHT 147-160 lbsMANAGERLeo. P. Flynn Howbout a welter who accomplished what this guy did??
You have set yourself a tough asignment because the 20s is arguably the best era in the history of the sport. It likley has the best middleweight era, lightweight era, and best flyweight era. If the 40s/50s was the best light heavyweight era then the 20s should take the second slot. Some great fighters not on your list who should be considered for a place are: Panam Al Brown Lew Tendler Newsboy Brown Tommy Loughran Fidel LaBarba Kid Chocolate Midget Wolgast Frankie Genaro Maxie Rosenbloom
Harry Greb Benny Leonard Jimmy McLarnin Mickey Walker Gene Tunney Fidel LaBarba Jack Dempsey Tommy Loughran Pancho Villa Tiger Flowers
Lew Tendler's on my list but all the others are great fighters indeed. Do any of them truly deserve to replace the guys in the original list though?
Lets put it this way. If Panama Al Brown or Midget Wolgast or Newboy Brown had acomplished what they acomplished in the middleweight division then even the most casual boxing fans would have heard of them. Flyweights and bantemweights have to achieve ten times as much as fighters in the higher weight categories to get noticed.
Your spot on there. They really are underappreciated until they reach the featherweight division and above and its alot harder coming up to compete with guys who are natural to a certain weight division. Thanks!
I would suggest that Panama Al Brown is a top 5 all time bantemweight. The flyweight division of the 20s was a veritable minefield of talent.
No real order. 1 Greb 2 Tunney 3 Walker 4 Jack Delaney 5 Tommy Loughran 6 Benny Leonard 7 Jimmy Wilde 8 Villa Pacho 9 Jack Dillon 10 Perhaps Labarba Any one could be in theory replace by other, outside of the likes of Greb or Walker. The 20's were pretty stack.
I would replace Tiger Flowers with either Tommy Loughran or Georges Carpentier. I think Flowers is overrated because he beat an old washed up Harry Greb who he could never beat if Greb was in prime.
