Who are our picks for worst 15 round guy (amongst world class fighters)? Foreman Norton (his two Ali losses and the holmes loss can be blamed on poor round generalship) Hearns Hagler
It looks like most of the guys who could win fights under these circumstances were guys with good jabs and reaches. Under all of the wear and tear of 15 round a boxer whose muscle memory kicks in and allows them to jab their way to victory is at a great advantage. One who I think is contrary to this notion is Rocky Marciano who got better as the fight progressed.
Well, Foreman can be eliminated from contention because he never fought 15 rounds,...Norton lost gallantly to Holmes....and vs Ali, I have always thought that he won that fight....Hagler, though he never lost a 15 rounder, only fought at that distance twice. His forte was never ring generalship, and that's why I've always believed that Monzon would have decisioned him over 15. Monzon was the 15 round master, in terms of ring generalship. The 15 round limit should have never been done away with for the very reason that it separated the men from the boys like the 12 round limit could never do.
Well, Hagler overtook Duran by sweeping the final two rounds. MMH's one championship distance win is too good for him to be included here. Hearns decisioned championship distance specialist Benitez to become a titleholder at 154, and El Radar was that division's greatest up to that point in time. Like Hagler, his only career decision win over 15 was against a triple crown holder, simply too good an achievement for Tommy to be included here. Norton? Depends on how you spin the SD with Young, but Ken aimed for a decision win by targeting Jimmy's body, and got awarded the WBC belt for succeeding. Foreman never went more than 12 rounds, so I wouldn't consider him here. Worst does probably merit a separate thread.
Yes. Tommy Gibbons had won over 15 rounds before, been that distance a few times, and he would not be defeated again until peak Tunney ended his career a couple years later. Remarkably, he not only over-paced himself, but was flagging at the final bell. It looked like Dempsey would have stopped him within 20. I wouldn't rate Dempsey a top navigator, but very competent against a very qualified challenger over that distance.
Don't mind some fo the picks bud, but I feel Norton won 2 out of 3 fights.. So while he might qualify, it's not from losing to ali IMO
