I think the funniest part is people are saying the guy who was knocked out by Sonny ****ing Liston in the first round has zero chance against the guy knocked out by Michael Bentt in the first round.

According to @FrankinDallas 's laughable logic, had Patterson stayed down after the first knockdown against Ingo in their third fight, it would have actually been better for him because he'd have one less knockdown. Never mind the fact that he would've lost the fight, the title, and the trilogy to Ingo.

Depends when he comes in. Best name fighter he could beat? Holyfield. Prime Holyfield of the early 90’s wouldn’t be a fight I’d bet on Patterson to win, but he might.

It'd be war, but I see Holyfield triumphant in most circumstances. Same way I see Moorer fighting a younger Holyfield.

He was notoriously protected as champion - that reputation didn't originate on this forum, it dogged him even during his heyday. He was embarrassingly KO'd by one of the weakest fighters ever to become lineal HW champ, & he bypassed deserving contenders in favor of one fighter making his pro debut & another who was unranked, & looked chinny in both of those fights as well. In his post-championship career, he failed to separate himself from fighters like Chuvalo, Quarry, & Ellis, whom the true greats of the era (Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Norton) used to wipe their a$$es.

Both of whom would dwarf Patterson.

Agreed Holyfield would be favourite, but it’s the biggest name Patterson could beat. I would just slightly favour him against Moorer, too.

He beat Chuvalo and he was robbed of what should have been at worst a victory and a draw over Quarry and a victory over Ellis. And I don’t think he should bear the cross of D’Amato’s management for all eternity. I think he was one of the 25 greatest heavyweights who ever lived. I guess we will have to agree to disagree.

That’s the harshest take on Patterson’s post-title career I’ve ever seen. I’m with you through the first part of your post, but I think his career from 65-72 enhances his reputation considerably.

And both of whom did not have the power of a Liston or a Johannson.

I’ve said repeatedly he was a better fighter old than he was as a young champion.

Patterson is being sold short. I think he could beat some decent bigger men. For example, I said earlier that Bruno and Mercer would be dangerous, but winnable fights for him. Now, it's the Tysons and Bowe and Lewises and AJs of the world that I draw the line at for Patterson.

That would be the obvious safe option.

He wouldn't necessarily win, but by god it woudl be a fight.

Maybe not, but I don't see any guarantee that he beats either one, either.
