Duran, Mayweather, Toney - a great inside fighter is about defense aswell throwing punches if you didnt know
Whilst not on par with Duran, Armstrong or Chavez. Jeff Fenech deserves a mention. Quite competant defensively inside and had a good array of technically sound punches.
Now technically Marciano isnt Durans equal in offense or defense on the inside. I think I agree hes the best HW inside fighter, he was built for it physically (short arms, strong, relentless and short), Technically Toney is a little better but Marciano is so far underrated technically its ridcolous, the way he would bob weave and counter is beautiful. HOWEVER allot of Marciano's best work comes at mid-range and not inside What I like about Mayweather/Toney is how they are near impossibly to hit clean on the inside and counter with big uppercuts or side stepping and countering. You talk about offense, but Mayweather fought allot inside against the top inside fighters of his era and came out on top, he must have been doing some good inside offensive work. Plus his inside work against top dogs like Hatton and Chavez set up stoppages. But ofcourse Mayweather's inside work is on the back foot
Here's a freak shout, Lennox Lewis. Uses his size, weight and positions himself beautifully on the inside. Not a great "worker" like most of the others mentioned, but hellish to share that space with.
There is more than just the Jack Johnson fight on Tommy Burns, I have about 5 fights of him total. We have more film on Burns than we do of about any other heavyweight from that era, outside of Jack Johnson of couse.(He beats Jeff, and Willard in that regard.) The problem with judgeing Burns on the Johnson fight as a inside fighter is first Johnson was one of the greatness defenses fighters ever, and 2nd, Burns was only relly about a middleweight taking on a heavyweight vs Johnson. Always weighing around 160-to about 170 pounds. So thats not relly fair to Burns when jugding him as a inside fighter. I think Burns does better pound for pound than heavyweight. No one says Foster is a poor infighter when compare to the Ali fight.
I have about 7 or so Armstrong fights. I pretty impress with Armstrong. If we took Joe Fraizer, and double his speed, and workrate, and of couse stimia for 20 or more rounds, lol. You have Armstrong. The guy just never back off.
He was talking about inside punching, Lennox was a good clincher and had a murderous uppercut, and smashed rabbit punches on his opponent BUT short hooks he could not throw well at all (partly because of long arms). He thought Audley did that allot better, and he was probably right, if Audley had a chin, stamina, workrate, balls he'd be world class. And I never rated Audley
Then again if Armstrong had to carry the weight Frazier was carrying he'd throw half the punches and with half the speed.
