i can remember talking about a fighter once who had over 400+ amateur wins, as a pro he never really made it. i think he was a featherweight in the mid 1980's but i'm not sure. anyone know his name?
I think it was Felix Savon who referred to pro boxing as a form of slavery. As an aside, mandatory retirement in the amateurs is at 35, these days anyway.
i pretty sure it was don curry had 400+ win's. I think the fighter you are refering to is bernard taylor who had a great 284-8 am record but never made wave's in the pro's. Barry mcguigan made his first defence of his featherweight title in the kings hall belfast against him.
Yeah Donald Curry has the best record i feel in the Amatuers. 400 wins 6 Losses Sorry but that makes Savons record look pretty ****.
Heres a list of other Pro's Amatuer records. Kid Chocalate 100-0 Ray Robinson 85 -0 Donald Curry 400-6 Terry Norris 291-4 Ray Leonard 165-5 Kostya Tszyu 259-11 Oscar Dela Hoya 223-5 Mike McCallum 240-10 Pernell Whitaker 201-14 Vernon Forrest 225-15 Mark Breland 110-1 (Shocking Pro fighter) Me if i had to pick the best Amatuer fighter how could i go past Kid Chocolate or Ray Robinson who both had Great Great Pro records and never lost in the amatuers.
Anyone can win 400 fightsf the opposition is low enough. How many World championships and Olympic golds does Curry have - then we can compare?
