Best and The Worst Cornerwork Hall of Fame/Shame

IIRC Correa was in Leonards corner for the Hagler fight and starts excitedly shouting "I want you to continue boxing him Ray" when Leonard gets back to his corner after the 1st round, Dundee just calmly looked over, told him to be quiet and got on with his cornerwork (uninterupted) for the rest of the fight..

Priceless put down!!

 

Hard to criticise the decision to go with Steward when you look at where he took Lennox.

 

good post, agree with these especially, booth vs mormeck was superb, especially since they knew haye was struggling with stamina after coming back from heavyweight, counting the punch output each round, telling dave how many to throw, when to pressure etc

jack loew is a ****ing disgrace from what ive seen. pavlik didnt have a clue what to do vs hopkins but all loew said was "your not throwing the double jab, double jab him kelly" - ****ing useless

enzo was always good with joe - mainly because they were so close, he understood joe so well, similar to roach and manny IMO

Anyone know what was said to both Froch and Taylor at the start of the last round?

I know if I was in one corner my advice would have been "Run". If I was in the other "Run after him".

 

Co-signed. This is the essence of great corner work to me. It's not necessarily about getting your fighter to win that one fight, it's about making sure he's best placed to keep earning a living. Whether that means a bit of advice to help him out during that immediate fight, or pulling him out so he can fight another day.

Imagine the pressure on Futch at the time. His world class fighter is adamant that he can win. You've just witnessed 14 of the best rounds of any heavyweight fight. You're fighting a living legend with only 3 minutes remaing. Must have been the hardest decision he ever had to make, but I agree, one of the best ever made in any corner.

 

I cant stand hearing him give advice, it grinds my gears so to speak.

Hold, hold, hold - Ruiz tactics. The ref wouldn't DQ him for holding in the last round unless he'd been at it all fight. Bruno got away with allsorts in the last two against McCall.

Froch's not lightening with his feet (fast hands mind). I suppose Taylor was gassing a little, but for one round.

I thought that Taylor looked fine going into the last...in fact he was still throwing meaningful shots until about a minute into the round when Froch threw a straight boomer down the pipe and caught him flush in the kisser. Thats when he got on his bike, but his legs were like jelly then.

 

I think throughout his career the Petronellis were good for Hagler though, some people need a loyal corner to base themselves from.

If you guys were boxing how would you want to be dealt with in your corner?

 

Katsidis's trainer against Juan Diaz was gash. Everyone could see Katsidis was getting outworked and outboxed every round but when he went back to the corner his trainer was like "you're doing great Mike, keep it up" atsch

Ronnie Shields did a great job for Cintron against Angulo. He just kept reminding Kermit to do the basics, jab and move etc. and not to lose focus. Worked a treat.

Which reminds me...Tsurkan's corner in his fight against Angulo were really bad. Tsurkan was getting beat up badly and had no chance of winning. The commentator's were screaming for the fight to be stopped but the ref and the corner both kept sending Tsurkan out round after round.

Mugabi's corner against Hagler was one of the most comical I've heard. "Listen to the Father John! If you're not going to listen to me, listen to the Father!" They had a priest there to offer spiritual support.
