Jeez tough one. Really is a pick ‘em between Fenech, Tszyu and Rose.

I can’t vouch for it being fact and I was too young to see the fight in real time, but it was alleged after the fight that Duran collapsed in his dressing room due to Thompson’s body punching.

I think there was also suggestion that Duran had incurred a rib injury during the fight.

You’re right, Hector was a top fighter but Duran was a bridge too far.

 

I had not heard that. I did hear Duran had a nice knot over an eye at the end of the fight, though. Y'know, looking back at that, two things really jump out about that fight. For one, Hector really didn't deserve that title fight at that time. He was Australian and Commonwealth junior welterweight champion and getting to 135 had to be a struggle. Moreover, he really hadn't done anything on the world stage at that time to warrant a shot. It was a testament to his talent that he put up the fight he did. A year later he really came into his own and was a formidble presence on the world scene at 140. Duran's people at this time were taking no chances with the title. Possibly because of the DeJesus non-title fight, they were stacking the deck for their man. If you check it out, his first 6 defenses were all in Panama (one was in the next door neighbor of Costa Rica) with all Panamanian officials. They were going to protect their man one way or another.

I'm not comfy with Kostya being freely mentioned on par with Rose and Fenech, excellent though he was. Those two were proven greats and had visible rare ability in differing ways that Tszyu never demonstrated as a pro imo.

Rose burned bright for a brief time but packed a level of depth into his record that Tszyu can't match. Beating Harada, Castillo, Rudkin, Sakurai, Medel and Ishimatsu is a serious achievement. I thought he had an argument for winning the Numata fight up at 130 too, when far past his prime and fighting on muscle memory.
