You're old enough to have seen him do live fights?

Not live, but reruns of old fights. What true boxing fan hasn't seen Cosell announce classic fights such as Ali, Frazier, Foreman, etc.?

I thought this thread was for modern announcers.

Somehow HBO had pretty good guys like Tompkins and Lampley.

I like Lampley's style, and his pacing / rhythm, but unfortunately he's just not very accurate.

I rewatched Williams-Martinez the other day, and some of his calling in that was atrocious, particularly in the late rounds. Martinez hits Williams three times; Williams hits Martinez three times; Lampley: "And a big hook from Martinez, and another big left from Martinez".

I've got no trouble with people who think Martinez won that fight, or with people who think Williams won it (I had it a draw, and **** that judge with the 119-110 scorecard). It was a great fight. But if you'd given Lampley too much attention, you'd have had it too far in Martinez' favour, IMO, and that probably helped feed into some of the controversy afterwards.

Without doubt: The Colonel Bob sheridan. Mostly heard outside the USA, but for those in Australia Bob Sheridan is the voice of boxing.

so true. He knew nothing about Boxing he got all of his information before fights from Alex Wallau.

And Barry Tompkins was awful also there is a reason he was fired from HBO and replaced with Lampley.
