Who were the fighters that were best at going downstairs. I'll start things off with some of my picks. -Mike McCallum -Eusebio Pedroza -Thomas Hearns -Joe Frazier -Julio Cesar Chavez -Roberto Duran -Carlos Palomino -Joe Louis -Henry Armstrong -Jake LaMotta
Even tho mostly unproven Cooney looked devastating and Olivares, Zarate and Gomez are calling to me as well.
Tyson's right hook to the body and right uppercut has to be one of the best combo's in boxing history.
But stopped doing it since late 90;s. Became totally a head hunting and predictable. All a leaping hooks.
There are 2 ways of looking at this, if you mean most effective body puncher or do you mean the hardest body puncher. Some fighters are head hunters and rarely throw to the body, but when they do the punches are devastating. Some people just constantly work the body. The best body punchers in terms of who hit the body the hardest and were the most effective when they went to the body are Tyson, Foreman, and Frazier.
Old Foreman in one of his 'comeback' fights on maybe USA Network....hit some white "journeyman" guy on the side with a body shot. The journeyman stood there for a second or so, then just collapsed on the floor thinking that is enough of this chite. Foreman went back to his corner and started eating hamburgers waiting for the post-fight interview.
Foreman was not a skilled body puncher ala Dempsey. Not even close. However George threw a right hook behind the elbow that was killer. A kidney crusher.
Micky Ward deserves a mention: that "reverse hook" -- tap to the head and the opponent instintively lifts his right and raising the elbow, to set up the hard hook to the liver -- was a monster. Trained by Victor Valle, who taught the same to Gerry Cooney. Paralyzed Arturo Gatti with it, knocked out Alfonso Sanchez in the seventh after being shut out with the rare one-punch KO to the body.
DLH has a powerfull body punches too. Maybe didnt throw it as much as prime Chavez but against Gatti for intense, DLH delivered some fierce body punches.
