Who do you consider the fighter of the 70's, I have added a shortlist, so please vote and debate.:thumbsup -Ali: Was forced to rely on his heart, toughness, ring iq,experience when he couldnt dance no more after coming back from his forced 3 year lay off in the 60's. Best heavyweight of the decade , he sealed his legacy with epic wins over frazier, foreman, norton, shavers, lyle and only had 3 losses to Frazier,Norton,Spinks. - Duran: One of the greatest lightweights ever, had an impressive reign where he only lost one fight which was in the dejesus trilogy. He defended his title 12 times, only viruet from puerto rico went the distance. Notice that his best win vs ray leonard came in the 80's along with his wins over moore, barkley and other great fights belong in that decade. Arguello: Alexis Arguello won titles at featherweight and superfeather in the 70's, he is by many considered best ever at 130. Beat guys like Olivares, kobayashi and Chacon by ko. He lost 3 fights that decade vs reyes, marcel and fernandez. Had succes in the 80's at 135 and had his 2 losses vs pryor at 140 in that decade. Wilfredo Gomez: one of the best ever at super bantam and arguably the best puerto rican boxer. Undefeated in the 70's. All of his wins came via ko, had an 32 ko streak including his best win over zarate who was 55-0(54ko) when they fought. Continued his 122 reign in the 80's till he eventually got stopped at feather vs Salvador Sanchez. Carlos Monzon: Monzon is widely recognized as one of the best middleweights ever alongside hagler, greb and sugar ray robinson. Monzon became champion in 1970 after scoring a 12 round tko over benvenuti in his backyard in Italy. His best wins are benvenuti 2 times, briscoe, griffith, 2 times, napoles, valdez 2 times and moyer. was 25-0 in the decade with 14 defences of his title. Others that deserve a mention are: Napoles, cervantes, foster, benitez, zarate,Canto and olivares. My personal choice is Monzon, but I find it very hard to select a clear winner since there are very deserving cadidates.
Duran. Interesting that Ali was a strong candidate in two different decades, but probably doesn't win out in either of them. You can argue for him in the 60s as well, as he didnt have the down moments that Griffith had, but he also didn't fight as strong opposition as Emile and have as many quality wins as him.
I voted Monzon because of being undefeated (in the 70's) and champion till he retired. Duran was probably better though
In so many ways it could have been Ali. Duran was the busiest by far and only suffered the one loss. But I voted Monzon. He was undefeated during the 70s and he simply owned the middleweight division until he retired.
Excellent thread! Over the last few days the idiocy of the general forum has led me to question the time I spend on here, but threads like this make it worthwhile As for the thread, how great was this decade! I think napoles was perhaps more than a notable mention but I aint gonna nit pick. In reverse order: Monzon, I rate this man the goat at middleweight, very close between him, greb and ruby but I give him the edge. His run in the 70's was brilliant and to say he's the third of the decade only highlights how great it was. Ali: what this man did in the 70's is beyond legendary, it is enough to make him a serious elite talent within boxing's history. Duran: for me the greatest of the decade. He was a phenon at lightweight and infact never lost at the 135 limit. If cleaned up a division in dominating fashion and it is this decade that cements his greatness as opposed to the 80's. I believe if surpassed the skill of benny and the dominance of gans to establish himself as the goat at lightweight.
Fantastic thread :good Voted for Duran - but in retrospect could of easily have picked Monzon or Arguello .
Yeah thanks I did it because I thought it would be good to mix it up a bit on the general forum with threads on classic fighters and current. I honestly considered adding Napoles to the main picks but since his better work was in the 60's I thought his resume in the 70's would look weaker than others like duran and monzon. I like him though one of the best ever at welter and a very complete technical slick fighter. I read that he was ranked 1 p4p in the early 70's but I couldnt confirm it, it was one of the reasons why earlier I made a thread on where to find earlier p4p rankings. Its amazing how many guys from the 70's are nowadays considered best ever in an certain division, proves how strong the decade was.
Rankings are hard to come by! Obviously the ring annual rankings aside, you pretty much need the papers or magazines from back then. Napoles was a monster but yeah considering the competition it wouldn't look as great. Yeah i've seen too many posts by headbanger and bailey for my liking recently, morons.
