True. But you have to remember that Kram was a bloke that interviewed Ali numerous times over the space of 10-15 years. It's good to read another side to Ali, instead of the deification we've been fed for some many years.
Mcilvanney on boxing. Brilliant book. Highly recommended. He's one the most respected boxing journalists in the UK. He does many forewords at the start of other boxing books as well.
Bad Intentions: The Mike Tyson Story By Peter Heller Good read... interesting for Tyson fans to read. It takes the Jack Newfield approach on Don King & paints a fairly balanced portrayal of Tyson's life, D'Amato's Life along with some interesting stories about Floyd Patterson, Wilfred Benitez, Kevin Rooney, Teddy Atlas & boxing corruption in general (with frequent mention of Suliaman & the sorry organization that is/was the WBC)
AND SEEN IT ON THE TV. Thomase Hauser write a great book in the early 80's called lights out. it centres around Billy Costello (a light welter champ) and gives a hands on account of the world of professional boxing
Definitely can't go wrong with that one, and it's now possible to compare the accounts of matches discussed against the actual footage of many of these bouts on internet services. I just picked up a copy of 1975's Boxing: A Pictorial History by Harry Carpenter at my local second hand bookstore. Years ago, I read and enjoyed a copy of it loaned by a friend. Carpenter offers some colorful narrative from a British perspective, with a spot of vivid personal editorializing.
Against the Odds, by Larry Holmes was a great book. He wrote it like he was talking to you in an average conversation which is what I liked about it. One NOT to read is The Holyfield Way by James J. Thomas II. That is nothing but 245 pages of pure nuthugging to Evander Holyfield. It ends with this: "Evander, I have one more idea," I said (James Jr Thomas II) He looked at me and waited for me to continue. "I think a great way for you to finish on top would be to win back your license, call a press conference the next day, and announce that the decision is now yours to make, and you have decided to retire." Evander smiled warmly. "You never give up do you?" He said shaking his head. I smiled and looked at him. "I learned it from you." :barf
Agreed. Larry Holmes - Against the odds is a great read. Very easy to follow, and nothing fancy. Basic, and to the point. Holmes clearly wasn't easily indimidated walking towards a guy who was pointing a loaded shotgun at his head in a gas station. Holmes said "you aint gonna do a dam thing" and grabbed the gun off the guy and beat him up. This content is protected The above is a good read as well. Its an asortment of pieces from articles on Tyson over the years, bits from the Jose Torres book among others.
