Gladiator-very underrated movie! For me it has to be Rocky. The best scene was the last one-where they are getting ready to announce the decision. Adrian is trying to get up onto the ring, as they are annoucing the decision. Rocky sees Adrian, and tell her that he loves her, as they are announcing Apollo won the fight. Rocky does't even care because he just found true love. Now that's a brilliant movie.
How much does it ruin it for everybody when an actor playing a boxer just can't fight? Like when you're watching a movie about a singer and you're pretty sure you've heard better singing in the shower? For me, DeNiro was the actor that looked best in the ring, like he did the most homework to come off the most believable. Stallone might be my second here, as he at least looks like he could pack a wallop!
Price of Glory is a great boxing Movie! With Jimmy Smits. About a Boxing Family & the seedier world of Boxing poitics. Resurrection blvd. was also good. A Showtime Series about Boxing.
I'll have to look into "Price of Glory," la, but you're right about "Resurrection Blvd.", very moving, believable show, like gritty, weekly episodes of the best '40s fight films.
I look forward to that, JG. As I always do to your take on things. EDIT: Sorry about the double post. I'm an admitted computer LOW-BROW!
And given your nom de guerre, I'm a little surprised you failed to identify Coley Wallace as one of the only four amateur boxers to defeat Rocky Marciano, a nifty (abeit well known) little piece of trivia. (Some of the younger and newer ESB members might not be aware of this fact, as appalling a notion as that may be to veteran Classic posters.)
Your right! thanx lobotomy! Wallace managed to get ranked in the top 10 by ring magazine and knocked out some good durable pros with his right hand, but overall his pro career appeared to be a huge dissapointment compared to his amatuer reputation. check out this description on marciano vs wallace in case u never saw it. marciano was robbed http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=59174&highlight=coley+wallace
Wow! I was aware that Rocky was considered to have been robbed in that one, but had never seen an eyewitness source document report of their match before. Q, by providing that link you have far more than made amends for the previous omission. That was very much appreciated and fascinating reading. I remember reading about Bob Girard's stylish decision win over Rocky (impaired with an injured hand) in the Skehan biography, and how Girard recognized even then that Marciano was an eventual world champion, a remarkably prescient anticipation. (He could have made a fortune betting the rent on Rocky with that particular brand of "insider" information.) Mad props for that valuable contribution to this forum!:thumbsup
Ok just saw "The champ" last night. I have the hardest nose ever for never getting sad in movies. Well this movie made me break down emotionally, when Billy died in the end and the kid kept going "come wake up champ, we gotta go home". Saddest movie I have ever seen.
Frank Hagney a sparring partner to top men and a low level heavyweight said John Wayne and Gary Cooper were both very good with their hands.
