Laing was a journeyman who lost to a shitload of domestic level fighters. Not exactly on a par with someone like Graham, is he?
Well, let's not forget he holds a win Roberto Duran, and he's way better than anyone the likes of Graham or Watson ever beat.
Laing wouldn't have been one of my personal picks, but i added him because he is often added in the discussion
Not a fan of Laing in these debates, he gets way too much credit for the win over a Duran who didn't give a **** at the time. True, Laing still got the win but its nowhere near as good as it looks on paper IMHO.
Another thing, Watson had a great win over Benn, but as for Graham who did he actually beat that could considered world class? I know he was robbed against Kalambay the second time but Kalambay was shot then.
Graham vs the Duran that fought Laing would have been horrible to watch. Unless you hate Duran that is.
Given that Colin Jones never won a world title and flattened Laing twice, I'd have him higher in the pecking order...;-)
I haven't seen Graham vs Kalambay II, but i wouldn't say Kalambay was that shot, he lost a real close fight to McCallum shortly before and beat Steve Collins shortly after, As for Graham and world class wins Kalule, Vinny Pazienza, Lindell Holmes, also Chris Johnson was well hyped and was being built as the next big thing and Graham beat him also. So would i but like i said many people often call Laing one or even the best boxer never to win a world title for what ever reason, much more often than Colin Jones.
Totally agree sas. I wasn't having a pop at you putting him the list because, like you say, Laing is one of the names that always crops up when this question is asked so you had to include him in the poll.
I remembered you put West forward a couple of years ago when we had a similar thread and we had a brief conversation about him. I meant to dig deeper but never got around to it!
