Best British fighter of all time?

When you start looking at stats , you would be very hard pressed to find many to equal Jimmy Wilde..

Bob Fitsimmonds is another who had a extremely impressive record in an era when he was the man at heavyweight and light heavyweight... A very tough strong man..

Personally i will come forwards a few years to Terry Downes and Randolph Turpin very good fighters who provided us with some amazing wins in a legendary era for Middleweights ......

Honorable mentions go to Lloyd Honeyghan and John Contei ........also a man i will also say at his best is probably technically the hardest heavyweight to beat .. Lennox Lewis......... The best heavyweight we ever groomed...

 

It's almost impossible to compare fighters from before WW2 with today's fighters. The fact that Calzaghe was last beaten three years BEFORE he turned pro is pretty hard to argue against.

NB For a short period Lloyd Honeyghan was a brilliant fighter. He thrashed the Floyd Mayweather of his day remember

Lewis wasnt on Calzaghe`s level in a p4p or talent sense.

What wins did Lewis have that were of higher quality than Calzaghe`s ?
Lewis has Tyson, Holyfield & Klitschko as his big name wins - Tyson & Holy were past their prime, especially Tyson & Vitali was giving LL all sorts of problems before the cut & Lennox never rematched him, choosing to retire instead.

Calzaghe`s best wins were Hopkins, Eubank, Kessler & Lacy - The 1st 2 were past their best tho not as shot as Tyson & possibly not as shot as Holy either tho that one is debatable but the other 2 were right at the peak of their powers at age 28 & favourites to beat the 33 & 35 yr old Calzaghe + the 21 title defences at 168 must gain extra points, surely.

Calzaghe is better than Lewis period.

Ps. Dont forget, Calzaghe hasnt been KOd twice by guys that he should be beating, oh wait a minute, JC hasnt LOST period.... ****ing hell.

yep definetly jimmy wilde,but a special shout for two other welsh greats,jim driscoll and joe calzaghe. 2nd and 3rd.

Lewis hasn't fought as many D-class guys as Joe. Therefore less risk involved for Joe. Sobot,Pudwill,Ashira,Manfredo,Mcintyre and the 'formidable Veit .
Whilst Lewis never beat an atg in his prime neither did Joe.

 

If you think were haters you ain't seen nothing yet. Calzaghe is probably the most hated fighter on esb.

:rofl In no WAY do I think Hatton is better than Calzaghe. Hatton is a level below Calzaghe who incedentially is my favourite active fighter.
I'm just realistic about his abilities and achievements.
There are many knowlegeable posters on this site who would rate Lewis above Calzaghe and there's nothing contraversial about that.

As for the best British fighter of all time, you have the pre war fighters Ted 'Kid' Lewis, Jimmy Wilde, Driscoll,Berg and Benny Lynch.

 

Don't asume anything about me untill all the facts are in.

Mcall was down to defensive flaws that Lewis later corrected and the Rahman fight was a horrible performance by Lewis. At least he got spectacular revenge in the rematch.
Mcall and Rahman were pretty good fighters, good enough to fight for a world title but surprising that they won a version each.

If Joe had faced their sm counterparts I'd have call them good solid wins but nothing remarkable.
So the Rahman defeat tarnishes his rep but I feel over all his resume is more consistant.
