Frankly, any answer other than Bob Fitzsimmons is laughable.

You know what , i made a list earlier and i forgot about so many, i think there are a lot more than we realise.. Joe .... I like sometimes to put fighters in lists when they have retired , i left joe out because he is still a work in progress.. I did however forget about Eubank , Collins, Benn, Watson... and even a few more like McGuigan.. I suppose on a thread like this you have to go away a while and read or list a few so you are reviewing them all, there were an awful lot of brit greats.. But hate Joseph, no i advocate him, he is potentially the best of them all in time..

 

To be honest BigCat I don't think any of those guys you've just mentioned gets in the top 5.

 

He considered himself Cornish. And seeing as Cornwall is part of Britain, that means he regard's himself as British.

I was a bit strong with saying it was 'laughable'. But to be honest I can't see a case with ranking any other British fighter above Bob Fitzsimmons on a pound-for-pound greatest scale. I think there's a bit of a gap, though Wilde and Lewis are clearly the next two in line. The other Lewis deserves a mention aswell as a modern representative.

He beat all of the best flyweights as well as a number of bantamweights over in America giving up as much as 19lbs on occasion.

 

If you looked on Boxrec you would get that impression, as their archives are far from accurate, and the majority of the opponents listed on his resume that have 0-0-0 type records were actually far more accomplished. According to Boxrec, certain opponents that he was facing for title bouts had very little to no resume, which is completely untrue if you were to actually do further research. Also, his list of fights in general was supposed to have been quite a bit more than is listed on Boxrec. Basically, he's a fighter who can't be understood by Boxrec hunting.

Still, while his opposition was certainly better than Boxrec would suggest, it was well below that of what a guy like Fitzsimmons faced. The main argument for his greatness is based on his utter dominance, especially over larger men, many of which outweighed him by 20-30 pounds and more, which is a substantial amount for a Flyweight to overcome. And the fact that he dominated in such emphatic fashion(he is generally considered one of the most powerful punchers P4P in the entire history of the sport) is a great part of his legend as well.

Great fighter, a phenom really, though he tends to be overrated by some and underrated by others IMO.
