Best British fighters in the original 8 weight classes

    If you know some of the lesser known names on his resume and consider him an unjustified loser in the Rose fight it's a no-brainer IMO. Although Moran is obviously completely justifiable.

    My bw knowledge is completely shitty after wilde's two fights against memphis. When I say completely shitty I mean i'm miles out of my depth regarding top fighters, let alone resume fillers.

    It's taking me much longer tracing bw divisional history because I don't really have any foundation to fall back on as I did at the higher weights.

    So based on those i've actually looked at in detail, the best brit at the weight is most likely wilde until I look more at the last 80+ years of the division.


    P.s. Have I just seen someone put calzaghe above conteh at lhw? Surely not!

    Well if you look at Ribs' original list Rudkin has beaten two of the honourable mentions on that list Caldwell and McGowan granted going 1-1 with McGowan the first fight being a controversial decision itself. Still a top record the Rose loss is unjustified imo. In my eyes it is a draw one judge gives it to Rose one to Rudkin the other just wasn't even watching :verysad. He gains kudos for his Harada effort and his longevity at the top during a golden era of bantamweights.

    Heavyweight: Lennox Lewis
    Lt. Heavyweight: John Conteh
    Middleweight: Randy Turpin
    Welterweight: Lloyd Honeyghan with a mention to Colin Jones
    Lightweight: Ken Buchanan
    Featherweight: Howard Winstone
    Bantamweight: Alan Rudkin
    Flyweight: Benny Lynch with a mention to Walter McGowan.

    Forgot about him tbh, too much in a rush to mention Thomas. Re: Moran, I didn't really take into account that several of his better efforts (Nelson, Attell, Driscoll etc) were above bantam. Rudkin's ledger probably outstrips Moran's at bantam with Moran maybe having the greater overall record. On a slightly different note, although I think that most of us agree that Rudkin perhaps deserved the nod over Rose, it's worth remembering that the latter was killing himself to make the weight by that point and wasn't the same man who went in against Harada, for example. Still a terrific performance by Alan, like.

    Does anybody want to chuck in any more honourable mentions, even if you don't think they're top tier? Apart from all the top flyweights I excluded and the obvious middleweight/lightheavy crowd, there were no places for the likes of Digger Stanley, Pedlar Palmer, Brian Curvis. And who had the best CV between Turpin and Minter?

    If anyone wants to mention the *******...sorry, junior divisions, feel free.

    Not sure , Turpin was good. Minter might well have beaten him. Eubank, also was up there, so yep going for Eubank.

    Hamed, only failed to win the Bantam title because he never fought for it. His performance against Belcastro showed what he could do.

    Both Eubank and Benn could be considered at Middleweight, on second thought. For whatever reason they both completely slipped my mind.
