Biggest problem posed by fitzsimmons was was he even a brit boxer? Yeah sure he was born there but didn’t he leave as a infant an never returned?He lived his entire life after that as well as his boxing life in New Zealand, Australia an America an never once boxed in Britain. All his titles were won as a Aussie or American cit so it’s gotta be stretch to calling him a bri boxer

Fitzsimmons was 10 when he left England Lewis was 12.
It’s not as though they were infants and let’s face it the Aussies claimed Kostya Tszyu and even Joe Bugner!

 

I disagree, though concede there's not much in it.

Allowing up to 143lbs, for just over the weight non title fights, Hatton is 40-1 at LWW, Taylor 18-1, 17-2 if the Catterall fight was scored fairly.

Hatton lost to the p4p #1 or #2 in Pacquiao, Taylor to Teofimo Lopez & Jack Catterall on fair scorecards.

Hatton beat past prime Kosta Tszyu, past prime Jose Luis Castillo, Pauli Malignaggi, Juan Lazcano, Carlos Maussa, Ben Tackie, Eamon Magee, Vince Phillips and Freddie Pendleton.

Taylor beat Regis Prograis (close), Jack Catterall (robbery), Jose Ramirez, past prime Viktor Postal, Ivan Baranchyk, past prime Miguel Vasquez and Ohara Davies.

Hatton has the best single win, Taylor maybe just edges it for their respective 2nd to 5th best wins, then Hatton has superior depth.

Hatton has more than double the number of wins at the weight, half the losses on fair scorecards, losing to the much better fighter than defeated Taylor, and whilst I'd have to check to be certain, I think he defeated more top 10 ring magazine ranked opponents.

Taylor has the advantage that unlike Hatton, there was a time when he was lineal champ that he held wins over the guys ranked 2 & 3, in Prograis & Ramirez.

As I said, there's not much in it, but I rank Hatton higher.

 

To be fair to those Down Under, I'm pretty sure it was Bugner who came up with the name "Aussie Joe" as he was fed up with being criticised for his negative tactics in the UK.

 

He visited the UK but never fought there.

 

You’re right there pal Joe got criticised for regularly stinking the joint out not for the fact he was an Hungarian refugee which was the narrative that was spun.
The fans knew there was a very good fighter waiting to get out as he showed against Joe Frazier but more often than not despite his physical attributes and talent he was passive and sometimes just didn’t seem to want to be in there.
In all fairness he went the distance with Ali x2, Frazier and Lyle which is a good effort yet managed to get beat off Jack Bodell!
