At SMW, Ottke avoided Calzaghe like the plague. What Joe could have done, was move up to LHW, I think he would have beaten both Tarver and Glen Johnson, which would have made him Champ there years earlier. Though he would have missed out on Lacy and Kessler? Which were both massive fights and huge wins :think Joe gets a lot of criticism for his opposition in that period of time, and rightfully so, a lot of his opponents were sub-par But who do you think he purposely avoided? Hopkins pulled out of a signed fight, Ottke refused to acknowledge Joe, Steve Collins retired due to injury?
Ottke didn't fancy it, that's true. Ulli Wegner admitted it in Boxing Monthy a few years ago. He was desperate for the fight, win or lose. He just wanted Ottke to fight him... but Ottke wouldn't do it. Calzaghe wasn't the only one fighting clowns in this period, Hatton was on the same level of opposition generally. There's one common denominator :hey
Didn't Ricky make like 14 defences of his WBU title? I remember Witter calling him out for fighting stiffs, that would have been an interesting fight. Still, Ricky deserves respect, for beating Tszyu then giving a very good account of himself against Mayweather.
Mario Veit was a good fighter, Calzaghe stopped him twice as a mandatory opponent. I agree that top fighters don't meet often enough, but from a business perspective, longevity is important in boxing these days. I think Calzaghe probably wouldn't have got any credit for fighting the likes of Dirrell, Johnson, Abraham, maybe even Ward going in to the Super 6. Simply, because Dirrell and Ward weren't big names over here, Abraham was a middleweight and Johnson was too old. Ottke definitely dodged Calzaghe.
gotta go with buchanan vs laguna 1, not just because laguna was a great fighter but because of the heat and high altittude buchanan had to endure as well, especially with him being a pale skined scot having to fight outdoors! he never even acclimatized, he turned up days before the fight. that would have killed lesser men.
Depends on what you mean as best wins. Biggest upsets ? Turpin vs Robinson is miles ahead of every other British fighter. Best wins must be from Jimmy Wilde beating the best American Bantamweights.
