Right now we have Lucien Bute, Steve Molitar, Joachim Acline, and Jean Pascal. Who were some of the greats from the past?
Well Sam Langford and Lennox Lewis immediately come to mind, as does George Chuvalo. Beyond a doubt, the best fighter to come out of Canada was Langford.
Sam Langford is not only the greatest Canadian fighter ever, but a candidate for greatest fighter ever period.
Recently probably Eric Lucas and Arturo Gatti Then you've got guys like George Dixon who was the first black fighter, Tommy Burns a good heavy Greatest is undisputably Sam Langford
For those not familar with Tommy Burns, he held the heavyweight title before Jack Johnson, who beat him for the heavyweight championship of the world in Australia. And of course Jack Johnson was the first black heavyweight Champion. There was an excellent PBS show on Johnson called "Unforgivable Blackness" which was both a DVD and a book. I bought both and it was very inlightening. Johnson fought and beat Langford, but Langford was green and only weighted about 155lbs at the time. Years later Langford chased Johnson to Europe trying to get a rematch but to no avail.
can you tell me how steve molitor is one of the greatest canadian boxers of all time? this guy is fighting bums and he is barely beating them too. this guy has no punching power and probably has no chin as well (we will find out once he fights a real opponent). i didnt even watch his last fight after watching his 2 previous bouts which was boring as hell. he tries to dance too much around the ring tries to use his so called "speed" to win fights.
Pascal lives in montreal since hes 4 years old so i think we can consider him a québecer as he considers himself one.
i know maybe he lives there but he is not canadian, i live in miami since 2000 i am a resident ,but if someone looks up at my background it says that im from other country .thats what im trying to say and also i dont think that bute, pascal,or alcine are the greatest CANADIANS of all time.
bute and alcine aren't but Pascal is. He learned boxing here, played hockey and represented Canada at the olympics. And if you ask him he'll tell you he is Canadian.
Yvon Durelle was rated a very good boxer in the 1950's at middle and light-heavy, fought a famous world title bout against Archie Moore. Matthew Hilton in the 80's won a world title, but didn't progress from that.
