Larry Holmes at # 1? I wouldn't place Holmes on my top ten list of those era's, maybe not top 20.
This is how my top # 21 would look.
#1 Ray Leonard his ability to land accurate, spontaneous, and hard combinations was the best of the era when considering the competition he fought.
#2 Camacho Sr. Just watch the Limon fight, or any of his fights at Jr.lightweight, possibly better than Leonard, his competition wasn't as good as Leonard's.
#3 Roberto Duran, he was able to be in the opponents chest, holding one of their arms, while beating the hell out of them.
#4 S.Sanchez, he was poetry in motion, one of the few Mexican fighters that had a complete skill set.
#5 M Hagler in his prime was devastating with combos.
#6 E.Pedroza just a brilliant fighter , always seemed to land more than 1 punch
#7 D.Curry. If he only had a chin.
#8 P.Whitaker, he actually should be higher on my list.
#9 M.Taylor, his hand speed was his game. But he lacked good power in his Combo's
#10 A.Pryor , A Henry Armstrong clone, but with power.
#11 M Tyson, he had a relatively short prime. But at the top of his game, scary with combos.
    # 12 W Gomez, probably should be higher on my list.
#13 A.Arguello, wasn't as fast, but his combos were deadly accurate and powerful.
#14 H. Davis speed and accuracy was amazing. If he had just a little punching power.....
#15 T.Hearns more of a 1-2 fighter, but he could fire of double and triple left hooks with ferocity.
#16 J.Chavez, workmanlike, from the head to the body with punches so seamlessly. Deadly accurate.
#17. Ali. Wasn't the same fighter he was in the mid 60's but in the early 70's still scary good with combo punching. Could be higher on the list.
#18 A.Cervantes , a complete fighter not the fastest, but his skill, and precision was top of the game.
#19 W.Benitez known mainly for his defensive skills. But he was very accurate with combo punching.
#20 could be A. Nelson Or T Norris. Nelson was more disciplined, Norris was much faster.
Holmes and Monzon were more 1-2 fighters or jab- right hand, occasional left hook . Not great with combo unless the opponent was in serious trouble.

It's close, but yes, even over Duran. Mike's combos were more exciting.

So if for three rounds in a couple of fights a guy through combos he’s eligible for ‘best combo punchers’ in a period covering two decades? Lol.

    No, of course not.
But Tyson through combos for several years, not just for a few rounds.

Apart from his first 19 fights or so, when he was just feasting almost weekly on guys who were little more than punching bags (as opposed to sparring partners, who sometimes hit back), can you cite me fights where he went more than 6 rounds where he threw combinations throughout?

Honestly, I don’t remember those. I remember him sleepwalking through a lot of fights if the opponent survived the opening barrage. And I don’t think coming out throwing bombs for a round or two makes one a combination puncher. It was mostly blitzkrieg followed by one-two-clinch.

HW's are not going to throw combos as often as lower categories. But the "blitzkrieg" as you called it is more than enough.
This thread is about the best combo punchers, not the ones who threw the most combos.

The best combo punchers keep it up. And some heavyweights have thrown combos deep into fights, throughout their careers.

Holyfield was a better combo puncher than Mike Tyson. Ibeabuchi for sure was. Michael Dokes.

Just because a guy goes bombs away until he has to take a deep breath doesn’t make him a combo puncher. Go look at Tyson-Bonecrusher to cite one of many examples. Or Mitch Green. Etc. And that’s in his ‘prime.’

Tyson may have been the best combo puncher to the body of all-time and from body to head or head to body maybe the most consistent.
