I'd really appreciate some opinions on this topic from boxing fans, about who would be the best counterpuncher heavyweight ever. A top5 would be even better, since I kind of expect most of you to name Muhammad Ali.

Ali over Louis. Fascinating. Can I ask why?

School me here, I guess I'm missing on the definition of 'counterpuncher'. I thought it meant countering with big shots after being tagged or swarmed.

Most recently I tend to look at a Jerry Quarry or a Victor Galindez as an example of good counterpunching. Help me out here.

Jimmy Young would fit the parameters I mentioned.

In my book, a good counterpuncher waits for his opponent to attack, make him miss and then land his own punches on his opponent. Quarry was a pretty good counterpuncher, indeed, but he also had to eat many punches to be able to counter back. He had a solid chin though, and he wasn't afraid of being hit.

Jersey Joe Walcott, Joe Louis, and Mike Tyson are the three most dangerous heavyweight counter punchers imo. Any of those 3 would make you pay with a hard shot when they made you miss, and all 3 of them could really whack.

Nice. I gotta see more Young fights. Loved the way Ali was
catching/countering Foreman, what speed. Jersey Joes style
pretty modern for his day from what Ive seen. I gotta
give a shout out to your boy, Morrison vs Ruddock,
tommy's counter hook that dropped Ruddock was
    Beautiful.

In my own personal opinion of what a "classic" counterpuncher should be.. I think Tyson was probably the best of the HW Champions.

Ali would counter.. but in the sense of beating the guy who was throwing looping punches with his straight shots (Think the right hands on Foreman ALL fight long).

The other type of "countering" Ali did.. is in the same field as the kinda "countering" Vitali Klitschko does.. where he is so much taller and bigger then his opponent he just leans back or steps out of range and returns fire with his longer reach.. although the controlling of range takes skill.. I wouldn't classify it as the same level of skill as say Tyson ability.
