This feels like a real gap in my knowledge. I couldn't name a single classic cruiserweight fight from the 90s. Was the division just dead around this time or are there some hidden gems from the era that are worth seeing?
Juan Carlos Gomez came to mind first, but his reign at cruiser was partially during the end of the '90s and finished in the start of the 2000s. I do think that the cruiserweight division was pretty bone dry by the time that Holyfield left it and Leon had started to age out, which left for titles to be claimed by guys who weren't exactly pound for pound monsters. Kinda a negative case of, "The nerds shall inherit the Earth." Lol
Carl Thomspon vs Chris Eubank 1 & 2 Carl Thompson vs Terry Dunstan Carl Thompson vs Ralf Rocchigiani Carl Thompson vs Akim Tafer Pretty much watch any notable fight of Carl Thompson the most exciting Cruiserweight of all time IMO.
Completely agree. Should have been a Superstar. Also add: Carl Thompson vs Sebastian Rothmann Carl Thompson vs David Haye Carl Thompson vs Ezra Sellers Carl Thompson vs Nicky Piper Carl Thompson vs Crawford Ashley Carl Thompson vs Yawe Davis
With the exception of Evander Holyfield and a small number of fights (Holyfield-Qawi, Thompson-Eubank, etc), it’s hard not to feel that the Cruiserweight division was an utter irrelevancy for the first 20 years of its existence.
