As the title implies, though I'm looking for names you don't hear about as often, like Young Griffo, Tommy Loughran, etc. Who are some of the finest, cleverest craftsmen who made an art out of defending?

Nel Tarleton, 148 fights with 119 wins.He was reed thin and only had one lung and was supposedly feather fisted but had around 40 stoppage wins.
In a long career he was never stopped

This is the stuff I'm going for. Thank you. I'd add in Benny Valgar, a the Jewish/Slavic/French/American who, like Tarleton, was never stopped and had little in the way of a punch. He was clever, had a great jab, and handily outboxed Johnny Kilbane.

I'll mention Tommy Gibbons. Rare breed of fighter who was great both offensively and defensively.

Cheers, I know hardly anything of My Valgar but I'll gen up.
If you've got hardly any power but rely on skill and heart it's every bit as interesting as a banger with a soft chin or no defence.
It all makes the 'hardest game all the more interesting.
I remember reading about Jem Driscoll, the old Welsh boxing master, who seldom took a punch.
Driscoll had a much broken nose and two cauliflower ears... What an apprenticeship eh ???

I agree. These guys have to prepare doubly hard because they know they've got to stay sharp for the distance just about every time out. Driscoll and Welsh are good calls.

What about "Wee" Willie Davies? Wasn't Ike Weir a quality British slickster?

The two Eddie's Cotton and Perkins spring to mind.

Joey Giardello and Joey Archer, 2 excellent middleweights both had excellent foot defences.
Giardello befuddled big hitting Ruben Carter who couldn't throw his coc#ed left hook, it was beautiful to watch.
Giardello would feint with his shoulders to go right Carter '****s' his hook, pops him and goes left........SUPOIB !!!!
