In your opinion, what are among the greatest defensive performances ever put on by a fighter in the ring?

Any type can be mentioned, from a personal perspective I'm also looking around for some great defensive shows where the fighter in question hasn't had to rely on reflexes but mainly on his footwork and moving in and out of range to avoid punches, as well as performances where a fighter has picked off and blocked punches well.

But don't let that stop you mentioning and/or posting clips of Sweet Pea fights. ;)

    Fire away!

Locche vs Cervantes I. This tops even Locche-Fuji IMo because Cervantes was a much higher class opponent than Fuji. Locche made him look like a sparring partner..a bad sparring partner.

    Roy Jones vs James Toney.

He was in an out side to side. James couldnt lay a glove on him. Gil Glancy compared him to Willie Pep during that bout. Ofcourse Wille didnt have dynamite in his gloves.

One fight that I dont think anyone will reference was Simon Brown vs Terry Norris in their 1st bout. Simon was right in the pocket the entire fight but he was blocking, parrying, slipping and rolling masterfully.

It was Duran like. At least that night.

Mayweather vs Marquez - unbelievable defense in that fight.

Nicolino Locche vs Fuji was also a pleasure to watch.

great answers guys, really like locche and pep posts. better than anything i could come up with butbi LOVE ali vs liston, williams and what ive seen of terrell...pure movement and reflexes. also jones vs toney was spectacular, maybe 4 clean punches against a top p4p fighter. mayweather vs gatti was pure brilliance...i know it was gatti but still amazing the layers of defense. speaking of toney, his skills against barkley were tremendous....almost no movement, always in range but chin tucks, shoulder rolls and preventative offense made the larger barkley completely impotent.

Benitez,Whitaker,Jones and Toney Starling. Those guys were great to watch in different ways. Nto a matter of performances, but look at thier fights and they have many. Benitez against Duran or Hearns, Whitaker against Haugen or Ramirez, Toney vs. Barkley.

conn for 12.5 rounds against joe louis. i have about 8 rounds on dvd and his movement was absurd. winky vs tito was great for how well winky could shut down titos offense. he used little more than a jab and high guard but he bossed the hell out of tito.
