A division with a long history, but not the prestige of the divisions north and south of it.
It's did have some excellent fighters come through it, but they were on their way to bigger and better game and money at lightweight.
Sandy Saddler, Kid Chocolate, Arguello, Camacho, both Mayweather's ( Rodger and Floyd) Azumah Nelson, Julio Chavez, Lomachenko, Stevens all held titles at the weight and were outstanding .
Best era? For me between 1976 and 86"
That ten year run had some of the best
Fights in history in the division.
It was those 2nd tier fighters during that period like Chacon, Boza Edward's, Naverette, Limon, Escalaera Lockridge , Laporte, and many others, that made the division so entertaining.

I'll leave others to suggest the best eras, I think the best lineal SFW champions in history include Johnny Dundee (6-2 in SFW WT title fights over 2 x reigns), Kid Chocolate (9-1), Sandy Saddler (8-year reign, but only 3-0), Brian Mitchell (12-0-2, though not outstanding opposition), Alexis Arguello (never established linege, but went 7-0 in title fights), Azumah Nelson (don't think he was lineal right towards the end of his alphabet reign, in which he went 11-2-2) and Floyd Mayweather (9-0 in lineal WT fights).

I agree with Flash24 if you want pure action the era of Chacon, Boza Edwards, Limon was awesome. You can pick pretty much any of their fights together but Chacon vs Boza Edwards II and Chacon vs Limon IV are two of the greatest wars of all time.

From an exciting fights point of view, 1981-1983 was spectacular. Boza, Limon, Chacon and Navarette had an awesome (almost) round robin.

Those two are amazing, plus Boza-Limon is not far off either.

As @Jel said the era of Chacon, Arguello, Limon, Boza Edwards, Camacho, etc. Was for me the best era of all time for the amazing fights and depth of the division, pretty much every top 10 fighter in that era of Super Featherweight/Lightweight was ridiculously tough to beat.

Davey Moore was an outstanding fighter, and a close dear friend of mine when I was a kid. I have pictures of him and I in his L.A. gym. I would post them, but I don't know how.

Great list, there are a couple I haven't seen actually!

On a side note Navarette looked great winning the title against Boza Edwards, shame he flamed out so early.

That's a terrible shame, ron, and hopefully someone can advise. In the meantime, how about an anecdote or two, please? I'm sure you have some great stories to share. I'd happily drive you to Memory Lane.

Not quite the early 80s but the Barrera - Pacquaio - Morales round robin was good in the early noughties.
