Considering all the dimension around the personage, I thought Ali was quite good. Otherwise couple of good movies out there like Cinderella man and Fighter. Obviously the Rocky saga. but Raging bull is still THE boxing movie in my opinion.
JG,just who is the star of the original BODY & SOUL,lol?Btw,they are all terrific choices but for me it's the aforementioned Raging Bull and the Burns Jack Johnson documentary.I also happen to love the Great White Hope.James Earl Jones is absolutely brilliant!
Have the people on this thread seen all the movies mentioned? If you haven't, how can you speak with such conviction without all the evidence?
I have them flicks on tape... Not my favorites...... I'll take Flynn in "Gentleman Jim" and Newman in "Somebody Up There Likes Me" For oldies..... I'll take "Rocky 1, 2 & 3" as well as "Raging Bull" for modern era classics... SR.BILLARDO:deal
Flynn in GENTLEMAN JIM's a great choice, MB. Without going to GOOGLE, do you know who played the Great John L in the picture? Of the picks on this thread, have you seen 'em all?
The Ring (1952) http://youtu.be/BH73i4pv8NQ Surely not the best boxing movie, but one that is very dear to my heart as I was at the Teamsters Gym in Los Angeles at the time the gym scenes were shot. Some of my best friends at the time, as did my old trainer, worked in the background of the gym scenes. The movie gives you gleams of the Chicano experience of the 1950's...You get to see Keeny Teran in a one line scene and close to the end of the movie you see the Golden Boy, Art Aragon, in a good size part...It is a very low budget black and white movie..
LOVE "The Set-Up". A classic film noir. The great Jack Chase is in it throughout, which is really neat to see. Martin Scorsese does the commentary for the dvd and mentions that his dad saw Harry Greb fight live. If I ever have the pleasure of meeting the man that will be the first thing I'm going to ask him about.
Thanks for bringin' it to mind, k. Knew the constantly-jokin' Aragon from the time he faced Basilio till he died. Hard to believe when a larger-than-life guy -- willing to make a fool of himself for a laugh -- ain't here no more. He lit-up any room he was in.
