Funny about Pep's powder-puff punch rep; he lived to fight another day by peppering, 'n NOT GETTING peppered. But, what's lost on most fans is: He STOPPED 65 GUYS. That's not chopped liver.
He could bang at one time. See 45 secs in, and finish at 1:48 [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35KqYUKUazg[/ame] 25 secs in [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJ_Vt6h0z4w[/ame]
Orlando Zulueta - 7 stoppages in 128 fights, although he was known to cut up his opponents. Gustavo Ballas - 29 stoppages in 120 fights Eric Morel - just plain boring
Malinaggi was the most unatural fighter in the history of the sport, not only a featherfist but also had a chin of glass, on top of being a short skinny dude, very skilled to be able to make it to champ
Haven't seen Ralph Dupas mentioned. I'll throw in a ringer -- how about Harry Greb? He valued bouncing around more than setting to punch.
Good point on Dupas. Funny how I watched one of his Garden bouts against Charley Scott on youtube and in this one he resigned himself to become more entertaining. Of course we know he had no punch but it was a good fight nonetheless because he was so good defensively he actually stayed right in the pocket, still ducking everything that came his way while unloading everything on Scott. Of course it wasn't going to hurt Scott so it was a good hard 10 rounder where no one came out hurt. But you have to be good in order to do that and dupas was. I also saw Mike Quarry resort to this style, presumably, to become more entertaining. It wasn't until after the Foster KO that he adopted this style and I wasn't sure at the time if he was now slipping and had lost a step, which was why he was engaging. Mike too, had no punch, but did have a good jaw. It made for ten hard rounds on Mike.
But Joey actually ko'ed Freddie Mills to win the lt heavy title,...knocking a few of his teeth out in the process, (or so my friend Bert Randolph Sugar once told me)...actually my man Joey Archer had a less threatening rep as a puncher. Everybody knows that the "kd" scored over SRR was more pf a slip than anything else...however, Joey did stagger Tiger briefly in their '64('65?) 10 rounder.
Corey Spinks was a damn good fighter that didn't have much of a punch. I remember seeing him just dominate as a local amauter in St louis.
