But it's not the fact that simply Gatti-Rodriguez was a better fight. So was Barrera-McKinney, and not by a little. So was Bowe-Golota 2. So were Littles-Liles 2 and Kelley-Gainer 1. I think the Ring also did the same in 2003 when they had Gatti-Ward 3 as Fight of the Year. It was like that won just to reward them for their trilogy, but Toney-Jirov and Gomez-Arthur were better fights than the one-sided Gatti-Ward rubber match.
The Ring Magazine may be hyped as "The Bible Of Boxing" but much like that OTHER book..it's got its flaws. Sometimes they give lifetime achievement awards to certain things. You can't blame them...they probably figured a FOTY article on Holyfield-Tyson would be more prevalent to boxing than a fight like Barrera-McKinney or Gatti-Rodriguez.
Barrera vs Mckinney is arguably the greatest fight of all time as far as I'm concerned. It wasn't a superfight, and the whole world didn't stand up and take notice, but what transpired in the ring for those 12 rounds was nothing short of spellbinding. Barrera vs Mckinney was the best fight of 1996 and the best fight of the 90s.
Fair enough. But I think noone can deny that this fight produced more excitement, even than fights that were better in terms of action. :good
Those were all pretty epic fights - but I had to go with Barrera/McKinney. It was a back and forth battle for twelve rounds.
Tyson-Holyfield was a great result and performance from Holyfield...but not the best fight of 1996. Takes two to tango.
Absolutely in a perfect world but I guess in some peoples minds, the best fight isn't always about what happens in the ring.
Bowe-Golota II was not only the best fight of 1996, but it was also quite possibly the most entertaining heavyweight fight of all-time.
