Admittedly. But at least back then there were other intriguing fights for the pair of them, like Cuevas, Benitez and Duran. Plus, what was Tommy's profile like at the time Dundee pulled the plug on the potential matchup at the early stage? Non existent? Starting to become known? [Genuine question] Once it was right, it happened, which is all you can really ask for, and (by the sounds of it) they didn't seem to drag it out a ridiculous length of time..... I wonder what a 1980-83 ESB would be like, with ''Leotards'' and [insert something for Hagler and Hearns here], together with the still excuse making, mind-numbing Duran fans that we have on here to this day.
I think I had it 10-5 Duran with Leonard finishing well & winning the last 2 or 3 as Duran took his foot off the pedal. I can understand how some might score it closer, but I thought it was fairly 1 sided.
It just seems longer when you are in the middle of it. Look at Haye-Wlad, that won't seem much of a wait when a young boxing fan looks back at the situation on 20 years. You just got to be patient sometimes.....;-) Hearns a successful amatuer with a great KO reel but Leonards team at that time could pick and chose who they fought. After Cuevas though there was def. the feeling that Leonard didn't fancy a Hearns fight and both had another 2-3 more fights (that would have had 1980s ESB screaming blue murder!) before the big one happened.
Leonard/Hearns 1 may have been the best fight. But for just the pure atmosphere, adrenaline, excitement and occassion. It's hard to beat Hagler/Leonard. I still get goosebumps watching that fight.
Leonard-Duran in Montreal for me. Crazy amount of skill from both men in that fight and although I am not necessarily Duran's biggest fan, I find it hard to pick many welterweights against that version (perhaps Hearns aside:hey). There have been few fights where the skill level has been so high (Leonard-Hearns was another tbf).
