I think he’d have a chance against Max Schmeling just on shear size.

Floyd would stop him, I see him getting Carnera out of there in around ten rounds.
Floyd s speed and power over come the size disadvantage.

He beat Jack Sharkey once, so I will play it safe and go with Jack Sharkey. :couch:

If Carnera could beat prime Sharkey, he could possibly beat anyone in that class of fighter.

Schmeling would be catastrophic. He'd would find openings all over the place and he carried power all the way to the end. Primo could survive to lose a decision, there'd be no way for him to make up for the knockdowns.

I see Schmeling getting manhandled by Primo Loughran style. Max wouldn’t have many opportunities to counter Carnera while he’s getting smothered. I also don’t see evidence that Schmeling’s power translates against super heavys.

I have a brief version of Carnera-Loughran. Tommy was landing some good crosses alright, he just didn't have the pop to really hurt Carnera.
Schmeling was one of the hardest punching HWs of the 1930s and he knocked out the most durable fighters of his era. It's not like Primo's size gave him a better chin than Stribling, Risko or Louis.
Even if Primo doesn't get shaken to the core by a single right hand, Max is going to be landing so often and with such accuracy that Primo will not be able to overwhelm him.

    No.

Prime for prime Sharkey was better, and greater, and would always win if his head was on his shoulders.

Carnera closed the deal, against an unmotivated Sharkey, while he was still the champion, and that is why we are talking about him today.

Sharkey is what we might call an exception that proves the rule.

He ha a ridiculous number of fights against elite opponents, and I mean ridiculous.

If he had never held the title, then we would be comparing him to Langford and Wills, as one of the greatest contenders of all time.

This man was capable of giving any fighter fits, but he was also capable of having a personal meltdown, sometimes when it mattered most in his career.

I get it I’m not a big fan of Primo but he does get a bit underrated around here. The corruption makes him hard to gauge. I don’t c y he couldn’t compete w a ton of contenders over the years. The best though? That I would favor him to beat…maybe Terrell?
