HW - could he beat any 170-190lb HWs, or bigger slower ones like Ruiz/Carnera?

LHW - this is the most interesting maybe....he beat Andries and Hill past his best, could he beat Loughran? Maxim? Is Harold Johnson a bridge too far. Those styles do play into his hands though

SMW - how does he do against Eubank, Calzaghe, Kessler, Benn, Toney?? Or what about the unofficial 168lbers of the 40s like Marshall?

MW - Light hitting Holman Williams? Burley? Benvenuti? Griffin? Giardello? Lamotta? McCallum? Kalmbay? Monzon? Greb even?

Some of those match ups really seem to suit him, others less so, I'd personally give him a shot against allot of the men mentioned based on styles

Carnera was too big and too good at using his size. Ruiz lost to Toney and Jones but they were physically bigger than Hearns who never had a whole lot of strength. You have to wonder where Ruiz's mauling style was against those two though.

Harold Johnson is too far. He could win against Maxim but Maxim was always decent at imposing his size and fighting it out in the clinches unlike Virgil Hill who stood at Hearns's optimum range.

He could only compete against them around the Andries fight, when he actually competed at super middleweight Hearns was quite far gone. In the end his durability probably fails him against those opponents.

He could win a decision off some of them. Not on a consistent basis though. It would have to be a bad day at the office for Giardello and LaMotta to lose in my opinion. 10 rounds is his best shot.

In all seriousness i think he could take one from Kessler. The rest would beat him at their best.

I'd say he has a chance against Jack O'Brien if we're talking LHW's.

Hw he gets outgunned and those who didn't rely on power (johnson, byrd, tunney etc) where far too slick for the lanky great.

Lhw same story pretty much. He beat hill but hill is, imo the worst of the greats. He's so uninspiring and he failed to beat the best.

Smw I wouldn't be surprised at all, no murderous punchers through that weight aside from jones jr.

Mw, he was very very good at mw, he just got iced. Probably his worst chance to chin ratio. By that I mean if he doesn't get knocked out, he'd beat most people. But any big puncher i'd favour to outgun him.

Swarmer I thought this would be an interesting thread, I didn't say he'd beat all those men, but they are match ups I thought would be interesting debates. We're talking about a freak of nature who many think near unbeatable from 147-154, my belief he is great against certain styles from 160-175 - ie outboxers - no one outboxed Hearns from the outside so against pure outboxers you have to give him good odds. Sure those that came inside to pressure him could stop him, but boxers relying on outfighting are on shaky ground against the original Hitman. Then there's fighters who were punchers but not that durable who he may KO.

Anyway here are my thoughts on the match ups:

Ruiz - well 2 middleweights turned LHWs beat him but both had to take his right hand, Hearns supposedly beat up the superior Tucker in sparring. This isn't out the realms of possibility, although Hearns ability to

Carnera - well Loughran outboxed him with speed, movement and smarts, maybe Hearns could replicate that

Loughran - Here we have a pure outboxer who Hearns has reach/speed/skill on, he also isn't a pure puncher, suits Hearns very well

Maxim - another slower outboxer without KO power, Hearns has to be favoured

Harold Johnson - yes I think HJ is a bridge too far, but if it turns into a jabfest do you want to write Hearns off? I don't

Eubank - Eubank likes to counter punch but would pressure and look for the KO when behind on points. HEarns is by far the better technical boxer, quicker, much better jab, much better outside fighter. Hearns certainly builts up a points lead and the stronger Eubank looks to stalk Hearns late to try and score a late KO. Hearns UD or Eubank late KO

Calzaghe - This is an interesting 1, Hearns is the quicker better technical boxer, has the right hand that always bothered Calzaghe. Calzaghe would be forced to eat punches, come inside pressure Hearns. This is a pretty interesting fight and I can't make a pick

Kessler - against quicker elite boxers Kessler has failed, he is also an out and out outboxer, playing into Hearns hands. He also has the power to KO Hearns. I lean to Hearns

Benn - Benn got outboxed by Watson, Eubank and Malinga (twice). He may have the determination like Barkley to come from behind to score a KO or he maybe KO'd himself

Toney - interesting fight, Toney's going to be forced to pressure like he was against Nunn. Hearns UD or Toney late KO

Marshall - wouldn't want to make a pick here, Hearns can win though

Holman Williams - a smaller light hitter with band hands that likes to fight technically. This is bread and butter for Hearns

Burley - Hearns UD or Burley late

Benvenuti - Hearns is a better class of boxer, Benvenuti has no size advantages

Griffin - Hearns outboxes him from range, Hearns has the size advantage, Griffin wouldn't quite do enough

Giardello - Hearns is rangier, quicker, Giardello likes to box from the outside and loses because of this

Lamotta - I'd go with Hearns. Robinson and Marshall beat Lamotta, I don't think Lamotta beat anyone as good as MW HEarns so I'll go with Hearns UD

McCallum - McCallum supposedly got the better in sparring but that was sparring. Hearns is quicker, better jab, McCallum smarter, the more complete and better in the later rounds. Could go either way

Kalambay - rate him very highly, excellent skill level, a very close technical boxing match that surely goes the distance

Monzon - Hearns the better outboxer puts Monzon out of his comfort range, looking to walk Hearns down for a KO late after losing early rounds. Hearns UD or Monzon late KO

Greb - I see this as a similar situation to the Calzaghe match up (scroll up), Greb being technically better, but much smaller

  10. Jake Lamotta could beat Hearns? Are you a ****ing crackhead? Lamotta was a slow worthless child molesting, ******, woman beating peace of ****. Hearns would destroy him

You're right, i was being a bit of a ****. Let me elaborate a little. Well with the outboxers you mostly listed guys who i think have a fluidity edge and a nice bag of tricks over him. You're saying he was never outboxed- a valid point, but I can't say that apart from Benitez, a naturally smaller man whom he had a pretty distinct size advantage over, he ever faced a genuine ring wizard or master like some you're throwing out there at those weights.

The heavies i just don't rate a chance. Too big. Carnera was more mobile than you give him credit for, not the best schooled or hardest hitting but not as easy to outbox as you say- and coupled with the size advantage i just dont see it happening.

HJ is definitely a bridge too far. Stellar outboxer with great power and an ability to come over the top with crosses you wouldn't believe. I'm pretty sure he'd KO hearns. Maxim isn't a bad shout, Robinson is the fighter I think is most like Hearns and he clearly gave Maxim what for, but i think their strategies would be different.

He would have a good chance against a lot of the SMW's you listed, except Calzaghe.

Against the MW's you listed? Nah, i don't see it at all man. Marshall hits too hard, too fast, and had too much skill. Toney would close the distance although perhaps he could frustrate Toney with his superior movement. Holman Williams just going by repute and record alone was a grandmaster of boxing in an era full of complete fighters. Not the hardest hitting due to hand problems- but as a defensive wizard unmatched in that time. maybe hearns could give him trouble with a swarming, high volume attack as Burley eventually did later on in their series and Cocoa Kid managed to do- but he's not winning on the outside. Burley at his best would smash him, a combination of speed and power that I think is terrible for Hearns. Benvenuti, maybe. Griffin, maybe. Giardello- I don't know. Giardello was not just an outboxer- he could fight it out rather well actually. LaMotta I'd say would grind Hearns down. No stoppage, but pretty clear neutralization via crowding and Hearns has a subpar inside game. Kalambay- I'd say Hearns would win that one. Monzon, nope. He'd muscle Hearns around a lot, lock the distance, and end it with a cross. Greb i agree with you on.

I laughed because you're favoring him over ATG MW's when his record at that weight(and above) just isn't that good. It's like saying, oh, barbados joe walcott would have a decent chance against ezzard charles because he sent some LHWs to candyland. And the outboxing thing i already went into.
