Might be controversial but...generally speaking, how about John Ruiz?

Prime example of an average fighter taking what little talent he had a long way.

He wasnt fun to watch but I think he is one of best examples of using this tactic to the best of his advantage, as the others mentioned generally were very good fighters who also had great chins.

Good pick and the #1 name that came to mind.

but I was ashamed of giving Ruiz credit...but taking away your opponents best weapon is part of boxing-- and life

I don't know if smothering is the right description.... But the man fought some of the biggest punchers of all time and beat them all. Which is why his name comes up first for me, not sure if it really qualifies for the thread though.:huh

Duran....he rolled punches.....he deflected body shots with his forearms.

He was a damn monster.....one of the best.

Unlike Hopkins who hugs like a ******.

Yeah I was going to say winky too. Im not sure if you want to call it smothering, he just blocked everything.

Hes got some extralong forearms where he can cover almost all of his torso and face at the same time. Most guys have to pick if they want to cover face or the body.

ehh not to fond of that word (smothered) in other words i'm thinking it just means how to hold on to your opponent to avoid getting hit. well in that case i'll say Hatton is a master at that. John Ruiz and of course Ali did it quite a bit during his career.
